Six Sooners Qualify for U.S. Championships

NORMAN – Six current and former Sooners punched their ticket to the U.S. Championships at the National Qualifier on Saturday with alumnus Colin Van Wicklen winning the all-around competition.
Along with Van Wicklen, sophomores Gage Dyer and Alexei Vernyi, junior Tanner Justus, senior Genki Suzuki and alumnus Kanji Oyama qualified for next month's championships.
“Everybody did well,” head coach Mark Williams said. “I am very happy with the performance of our current guys. Genki did great in his first ever qualifier. For Alexei and Gage, it was their first time competing as seniors. I am proud of the way they performed.”
Van Wicklen totaled an 83.650 in the all-around, taking home first place. The alumnus also claimed first on vault with a 14.700 and secured top-three finishes on high bar (13.900, second) and still rings (14.000, third). He also tied for seventh on floor with a 13.800.
Three current Sooners finished in the top ten in the all-around competition.
Suzuki placed third overall with an 82.250 all-around total. The newly anointed U.S. citizen registered four top-10 finishes. His best event was high bar, where he placed third with a 13.550. The North Wales, Pa., native placed fourth on parallel bars with a 13.950, sixth on still rings with a 13.450 and 10th on pommel horse with a 13.450.
Dyer placed sixth with a 78.550 all-around score. The sophomore had top-10 showings on parallel bars (13.500, sixth) and floor (13.800, seventh) to qualify for the championships.
Vernyi finished just behind Dyer, placing seventh with a 78.500. His 14.300 on vault was good enough for fifth place. The Cypress, Texas, native tied for seventh on floor with a 13.800.
Despite being scratched from two events due to illness, Justus qualified after notching three top-10 finishes.
“With his illness, he really had to fight that and scratch and claw his way into qualification,” Williams said.
On floor, Justus turned in his best performance of the night, tying for third with a 14.000. The junior also tied for fifth on vault with a 14.300 and sixth on high bar with a 12.850.
Oyama, who finished at OU in 2015, claimed three top-10 finishes. He wrapped up second on vault with a 14.600, picked up third on parallel bars with a 14.050 and placed fifth on floor with a 13.900.
With seniors Levi Anderson and Yul Moldauer, and alumnus Allan Bower pre-qualified for the U.S. Championships, the Sooners will be well represented next month in Boston. Nine Sooners will compete in the senior division. Incoming freshmen Spencer Goodell and Vitaly Guimaraes will compete in the junior division.
U.S. Championships will take place August 16-19 in Boston, Mass., at TD Garden.
