NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma baseball team was selected as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional hosted by the No. 7 overall seed Florida State. The Sooners open postseason play on Friday, June 1 at 11 a.m. CT against No. 2 seed Mississippi State.
Oklahoma earned the 38th NCAA postseason appearance in program history and the first under head coach Skip Johnson. The Sooners head to Tallahassee with an overall record of 36-23 after finishing fourth place in the Big 12, the nation's second-ranked RPI conference, at 14-10.
“I think it's an accomplishment,” OU head coach Skip Johnson said. “I think that's what we accomplished when we set our goals out this year, from the fall to the spring. We go out every day and try and prepare to win the last game of the year. We're excited about the opportunity to go to Tallahassee.”
Florida State won the ACC postseason tournament championship and finished with a 43-17 overall record and 16-13 conference mark. The Seminoles are making their 41st consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. Florida State is guided by head coach Mike Martin, who recently became the winningest head coach in Division I baseball.
Mississippi State finished fifth in the SEC West and is making its 37th appearance at an NCAA Regional. The Bulldogs, who are led by interim head coach Gary Henderson, are 31-25 overall and finished 15-15 in the SEC.
Rounding out the field is four-seed Samford, which won the Southern Conference postseason championship. The Bulldogs and 14th-year head coach Casey Dunn are making their first NCAA Regional appearance since 2012 and enter the postseason with an overall record of 36-24 after finishing conference play at 14-10.
Each game of the regional will be streamed on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Friday's game against Mississippi State will air on ESPNU. The Sooner Sports Network will also carry each Oklahoma game.
