COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team looks for its seventh consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) championship as it takes on No. 4 Stanford, No. 11 Air Force and No. 12 California on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Sooners, Cardinal and Bears are all coming off of a bye week, while the Falcons claimed the USAG National Championship for the ninth consecutive year last weekend, scoring a 396.400. NOTES AND NUMBERS
STREAKING
The Sooners have won every meet in which they have competed since placing second at the 2014 NCAA team finals. In that span they have racked up 84 victories, the most consecutive wins in program history (the next most was 52 straight from 2002 to 2004). It stands as the longest current streak among all NCAA Division I sports.
RECAPPING THE LAST MEET
In OU's season finale in Columbus, Ohio, it completed another perfect regular season after defeating Ohio State in comeback fashion 413.650-412.700. With the Sooners behind through five events, the competition came down to the final rotation. OU posted a 68.450 on parallel bars, completing the comeback. Levi Anderson had another phenomenal all-around performance, totaling 83.700 with four scores of 14.000 and above. Tanner Justus earned an event title on floor (14.300) while Reese Rickett (14.300) and Genki Suzuki (14.700) won on still rings and high bar, respectively.
CONFERENCE DOMINANCE
During Mark Williams' tenure, OU has dominated the MPSF year after year. In his previous 18 seasons, Williams has won 15 conference titles. The Sooners claimed their sixth consecutive conference championship in 2017, pacing the competition with a 432.200. In addition to the team title, OU gymnasts claimed five individual MPSF titles with Yul Moldauer finishing first on floor, still rings and parallel bars, and Matt Wenske and Levi Anderson winning on vault and high bar, respectively. Williams was named MPSF Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year and the 13th time in his career.
ALL-AROUND SUCCESS
Yul Moldauer and Levi Anderson have posted the top two all-around scores in the NCAA this season. In Moldauer's only all-around performance of the year against Nebraska and Stanford on Feb. 3, he registered an 87.150, the highest total in the country. The junior took home three event titles on floor (14.400), still rings (14.600) and parallel bars (14.900). Anderson, who has competed in the all-around twice, tallied the second highest all-around score with an 86.100 against Navy on Feb. 24.
HUNTING FOR THE NISSEN-EMERY
Hunter Justus was named a finalist two weeks ago for the Nissen-Emery Award, given to the top senior gymnast in the NCAA. Throughout his OU career, Justus has been a model of consistency, competing in every meet during his four years. The Cypress, Texas, native has been a part of three national championship teams and is undefeated as a Sooner, winning more than 80 straight meets. Outside the gym, Justus maintains a 3.34 GPA in energy management and volunteers at Cleveland Elementary School, teaching students about gymnastics and helping them further their education. Considered the highest honor in college gymnastics, the Nissen-Emery Award will be presented at the 2018 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship Banquet in Chicago on April 19.
THE CHAMP RETURNS
Yul Moldauer has made his mark on the OU record books and continues his storied career this season. So far in 2018, the junior has a team-leading 15 event titles through six meets. In Feburary, Moldauer won his second straight American Cup, becoming the first gymnast to win back-to-back titles since former Sooner Jonathan Horton in 2006 and 2007. The Arvada, Colo., native totaled a 85.964 all-around score (more than 2.500 higher than the runner-up's mark), finished in the top three on all six events and posted higher than a 14.000 on five of six events. Moldauer is a three-time individual national champion and became just the second freshman to ever win the NCAA all-around title in 2016. In 2017, he added another pair of crowns on floor and still rings. His three titles rank fourth all-time at OU behind current assistant coach Steven Legendre (6) and Olympians Horton (6) and Jake Dalton (4).
THERE IS ONLY ONE
The Sooners enter the postseason ranked No. 1 in the national rankings with a 414.933 four-score average, more than four points ahead of the second ranked team. OU ranks in the top three on five of six events, holding the No. 1 spot on parallel bars (69.833) and high bar (69.317), ranking second on pommel horse (68.183) and still rings (69.717), and third on vault (71.800). Yul Moldauer ranks first on still rings (14.650) and parallel bars (14.933) and sixth on pommel horse (14.400). Fellow junior Levi Anderson owns the fourth-best all-around average with an 82.700 and is third on high bar (14.250). Genki Suzuki is the top-ranked gymnast on high bar (14.500) and Hunter Justus is fifth on vault (71.800).
TRIO UP FOR CGA AWARDS
Yul Moldauer, Gage Dyer and Genki Suzuki have all been nominated for 2018 College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Awards. Moldauer, who is nominated for MVP, enjoyed a phenomenal season, leading the Sooners with 15 event titles. In his only all-around performance of the year, he totaled a 87.150, the highest score in the NCAA this season. Dyer, who is tabbed for Rookie of the Year, has been most productive on floor and vault, combining for seven scores of 14.000 or higher, including a career-high 14.900 on vault in OU's win against Navy. Suzuki, who is nominated for Event Specialist of the Year, enjoyed an outstanding season on high bar, competing on the event in all seven meets. The junior finished the season ranked No. 1 on the event with a 14.500 average. The awards, along with the Nissen-Emery Award, will be presented at the 2018 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship Banquet on Thursday, April 19.
UP NEXT
After confernce championships, OU heads to Chicago, Ill., to try to win its fourth straight NCAA Championship. The two-day meet starts with preliminaries on April 20 followed by the finals on April 21. The Sooners look to tie Penn State for most titles in NCAA history with 12.
