NORMAN – The No. 11 University of Oklahoma baseball team salvaged its series against No. 17 Texas with a 6-0 win in front of 1,227 at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Sunday afternoon. The Sooners moved back into first place in the Big 12 at 26-13 overall and 9-3 in league play, while the Longhorns fell to 24-14 and 11-4.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Nathan Wiles (Overland Park, Kan.) pitched a career-best 7.2-shutout innings. He scattered five hits, walked just one and matched his career-high with seven strikeouts. Wiles did not allow a runner to third and worked with a runner in scoring position just four times.

“Wiles was outstanding executing pitches and when he got the three to none lead he got a little bit better,” said OU head coach Skip Johnson. “He kind of got those guys off balance and made quality pitches when he had to. When he really got good was about the fourth inning on.”

Junior third baseman Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.) was 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk. He scored from second in the second on a base hit to shallow left as the first run of the day. Ware later extended the OU lead to 3-0 with a two-run single to left-center in the third. He also started the Sooners' three-run rally in the third with a one-out single as Oklahoma scored three runs all on free passes with the bases loaded.

From the leadoff spot, junior left fielder Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) was 3-for-4 with a run driven in. Senior second baseman Kyle Mendenhall (Carlsbad, Calif.) added his third multi-hit game of the series with a 2-for-3 showing. Freshman designated hitter Cade Cavalli (Bixby, Okla.) drove in the first run of the game and finished 2-for-3.

Right-hander Blair Henley (5-4) lasted 4.1 innings for Texas. He was charged with four runs on nine hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts. DH Zach Zubia went 2-for-4 as the Longhorns tallied just five hits.

The Sooners are off in the midweek and return to action on the road next Friday, April 20 against Texas Tech.
