NORMAN ? Oklahoma guard Shaina Pellington was named the Big 12's Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league office announced on Monday.
Pellington recorded a team-high 22 points, pulled down five rebounds and logged three assists in OU's 79-77 overtime win at West Virginia on Saturday. The freshman played 39 minutes as the Sooners defeated the Mountaineers in Morgantown for the first time, finishing 6-of-15 from the field and knocking down a career-best 10 free throws at the charity stripe.
Pellington is the sixth OU freshman in school history to be named Big 12 Freshman of the Week on four different occasions in one season, joining Sharane Campbell (2011-12), Aaryn Ellenberg (2010-11), Danielle Robinson (2007-08), Courtney Paris (eight times, 2005-06) and LaNeisha Caufield (1998-99).
The Pickering, Ontario, native ranks second nationally among Division I freshmen with a .496 field goal percentage. Pellington has recorded a team-high six 20-point scoring performances this season, which is the most by a Big 12 freshman this season.
She ranks first among Big 12 freshmen in scoring during the regular season with 12.9 points per game. Pellington's 13.8 points per game in league play also leads all Big 12 freshman and ranks 15th in the conference.
The Sooners' freshman class has claimed seven Big 12 Freshman of the Week award honors this season through 16 weeks. Ana Llanusa won the award on Dec. 18 and Feb. 5, while Mandy Simpson claimed the honor on Nov. 13. ?
