NORMAN – Seven Oklahoma women's basketball players were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Team on Thursday, the league office announced.
The Sooners led the Big 12 with seven total selections. Maddie Manning, Gabbi Ortiz, Vionise Pierre-Louis and LaNesia Williams were all selected to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team (includes student-athletes who have recorded a 3.20 or better GPA).
Ijeoma Odimgbe, Gileysa Penzo and McKenna Treece all received academic second-team honors (3.00 to 3.19 GPA).
Ortiz was one of four student-athletes in the Big 12 recognized with a 4.0 GPA. OU's five seniors were among 11 Big 12 student-athletes recognized as three-time Academic All-Big 12 selections.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First team honorees have a 3.20 GPA or higher and second team members have a GPA of 3.00-3.19.
OU returns to action on Saturday as the Sooners travel to Morgantown, W. Va., to face West Virginia. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT inside WVU Coliseum.
