Moldauer and Team USA Take Fourth at Worlds

October 29, 2018 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN ? University of Oklahoma senior Yul Moldauer, 2017 OU graduate Colin Van Wicklen and Team USA concluded the team competition at the 2018 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, Monday morning, taking fourth in the team final. It was the highest team finish for the U.S. men at a World Championships since 2014 when they took third in Nanning, China.

“I couldn't be prouder of Team USA's effort today,” said Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams. “I definitely saw their NCAA background come through as a united team. Lots of great performances with current and former OU guys, Colin and Yul, going 8-for-8 in their biggest competition yet."

Team USA (251.994) finished just shy of a team medal in the final, taking fourth behind China (256.634), Russia (256.585) and Japan (253.744) in the final standings. Moldauer claimed the top score on floor exercise for the U.S. men (14.600) despite battling through a bruised bicep he suffered in the qualification round. Van Wicklen, competing?in his first?international competition with Team USA, helped the team with the top score on vault for the U.S. (14.733).

“Today, felt pretty good. You know, we didn't medal but we learned a lot from this experience,” said Moldauer on his team's performance. “We are a young team but there's a lot of energy with us. We now know what we need to improve on so next year we can move up to the podium.”

Moldauer will continue his journey in Qatar with the men's all-around final on Wednesday at 8 a.m. CT and the floor event final Friday at 8 a.m. CT. He looks to claim back-to-back medals on floor as he claimed bronze at last year's World Championships in Montreal and took seventh in the all-around. Both the all-around and event finals will be broadcast live on the Olympic Channel.
