Baseball Hosts Dallas Baptist Friday in Fall Exhibition

October 25, 2018 | Baseball

NORMAN – Oklahoma baseball will play host to Dallas Baptist in a fall exhibition game Friday at 6 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Admission is free.

Fans planning to attend should note that parking lots are expected to fill quickly due to Homecoming activities at the Lloyd Noble Center across the street from Mitchell Park.

The Sooners are playing their first exhibition under a new rule that allows Division I baseball teams to play up to two exhibition contests in the fall against outside competition after two rainouts earlier this fall.

“The biggest thing is you get to see guys in a different environment than intrasquad scrimmages every day and see how they respond,” head coach Skip Johnson said. “To see them in that different environment is going to help us evaluate those guys, and whether the game speeds up or slows down for them. It's going to help us a lot, and win or lose, it's a gift – what are you going to learn from winning or what are you going to learn from losing.”

Friday's game will give Oklahoma baseball fans an opportunity to see the squad in action against a new opponent. The Sooners, in their second year under Johnson, return 16 players from last year's NCAA Regional finals team and welcomed 24 newcomers to the roster. The incoming class includes 16 freshmen and eight transfers, including 12 newcomers from Oklahoma and 11 from Texas.

Dallas Baptist reached the NCAA postseason in 2018 for the fifth straight year, where it played in the Fayetteville Regional, and the Patriots return 16 players for 2019.

OU's first two scheduled exhibition games (against Arkansas on Sept. 22 and DBU on Oct. 13) were called off due to forecast inclement weather.

All Sooners fall practices take place at L. Dale Mitchell Park and are open to the public.

The Sooners baseball and softball teams are teaming up for the second straight year to host a Halloween Game on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The two Sooner programs have launched a fundraising campaign with the Vs. Cancer Foundation to support The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center. The fundraiser will culminate with the intrasquad scrimmage, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 at Marita Hynes Field. Click here for more information and how to donate.
