NORMAN – Team White defeated Team Red in dominant fashion, 25-6, in Oklahoma Wrestling's annual Red/White Scrimmage Thursday inside McCasland Field House.
“I think that there were some really good things that happened,” said third-year head coach Lou Rosselli. “There were some weight classes where I thought the guys were going after their opponents well and taking control.
“I think each weight class looked better than we did a year ago. As we go forward, we need to make sure we get better and keep improving on some areas and working on the pace. We need to keep getting better at wrestling hard and making sure that we're controlling tempo. It's early, but we're making gains.”
Freshman Anthony Madrigal struck first for the White team with a win over Clay Vincent by technical fall, 19-1, in the 133-pound bout.
At 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Dom Demas of the Red squad defeated freshman Niko Chavez in a 5-4 decision to put the Red team on the board.
Davion Jeffries gave the White team a 10-3 lead in the match when he defeated freshman Mike McFadden (Red) by technical fall, 22-3, in the 149-pound bout.
In the 157-pound match, Justin Thomas (Red) notched a decision over the White team's Jared Schieber, 6-1.
Hayden Hansen pushed the White team's lead to 13-6 with a 2-1 decision over Red's Jeremy Thomas in the 165-pound matchup. At the end of regulation, the bout was tied at 1-all and Hansen used the riding time point to earn the victory.
At 174 pounds, White's Anthony Mantanona defeated Elijah Joseph (Red) by fall in 0:53, to give the White team a 19-6 lead in the match.
Jake Woodley (White) won the 197 bout in a 9-2 decision over Red's Ruston Duke.
In the final bout of the night, the White team's Jake Boyd secured an overtime victory against Connor Webb (Red), 2-1. Boyd and Webb were scoreless after one period before Webb used an escape to take a 1-0 lead in the second. Boyd escaped in the third period to tie things at 1-all and send the match into overtime. After the first sudden-victory period was scoreless, Boyd put a point on the board with an escape before riding Webb out to win, 2-1.
