NORMAN – After putting up the highest score in the nation for back-to-back weeks, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team rose to No. 1 nationally in this week's rankings. The Sooners hold an impressive average team score of 197.538 through the first two meets of the season.
OU totaled a 197.525 against No. 15 Iowa State and TWU on Sunday afternoon, adding that to a mark of 197.550 against then No. 16 Georgia in the first meet.
LSU is ranked No. 2 with an average score of 197.283, while Utah sits in third with a 197.142. UCLA (196.917) and Florida (196.450) are ranked No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
As a team, the Sooners are in the top five nationally on every event, including three first-place rankings. The Sooners check in at No. 1 on vault (49.450), bars (49.463) and beam (49.350) and are fourth on floor (49.275).
In the national individual rankings, eight Sooners are in the top 25 on at least one event. Sophomore Maggie Nichols ranks third in the all-around (39.625), and freshman Anastasia Webb is also in the top 10 as she is tied for ninth (39.400).
On vault, five gymnasts are ranked with junior Brenna Dowell holding the top spot with an average of 9.938. Senior AJ Jackson is tied for fifth, while sophomores Bre Showers and Nichols share 12th. Webb ranks 24th.
On bars, Nichols sits in third with an average of 9.938. Dowell and junior Nicole Lehrmann are tied for seventh, while senior Stefani Catour and Jackson share 24th. Nichols also holds a top-three ranking on beam as she is tied for third with a 9.900. Showers and freshman Carly Woodard are also ranked on the event, coming in 10th and 14th, respectively.
Jackson and Nichols both rank in the top 15 on floor, sitting in sixth and 15th, respectively.
The Sooners will be back on the road Friday, Jan. 26, to take on the No. 5 Florida Gators. The meet is slated for a 5:45 p.m. CT start at the Stephen O'Connell Center and will air on the SECNetwork+.
