NORMAN — Eleven members of the 2017 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team have added to an already decorated season for the Sooners as they recorded Scholastic All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). This total matches the 2016 squad for the most selections in a single season in program history.
OU has now captured at least five spots on the Scholastic All-America listing for 11 straight years. Under head coach K.J. Kindler's leadership, Oklahoma gymnasts have earned a total of 79 academic awards from the NACGC/W.
For the fourth consecutive season, Chayse Capps and Maile'ana Kanewa earned a spot on the listing, while rising senior Stefani Catour received recognition for the third straight year.
Brenna Dowell, Reagan Hemry, Nicole Lehrmann, Kara Lovan and McKenzie Wofford were all named All-Americans for the second time, while Charity Jones was a first-time honoree. 2017 freshmen Maggie Nichols and Brehanna Showers both also earned a spot on the honor roll.
In order to earn NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors, a gymnast must attain a cumulative or yearly grade point average of 3.5 or better.
This season, 12 Sooners were named Academic All-Big 12 selections, the most in program history under Kindler's direction. In addition, the Sooners were one of five OU programs to be recognized for posting a perfect 1,000 multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), accomplishing the feat for the fourth consecutive year. The program finished the spring semester with a 3.46 team GPA.
