NORMAN – Incoming Oklahoma freshman guard Shaina Pellington has been selected as one of 24 players to try out for the Canadian U19 National Team starting July 2.
If Pellington is selected to the team following the three-day evaluation, she will then train with the U19 squad from July 5-11 in preparation for the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup.
The 5-7 guard, who is ranked the No. 1 international point guard by Prospect Nation, recently was named the MVP of the Across Boarder Global Games in May. Pellington scored 16 points for Team Canada, while competing against some of the United States' top players in the 2017 signing class.
Pellington most recently competed for Canada at the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championships, averaging 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. She led Canada's U16 squad to a gold medal at the 2015 FIBA Americas Tournament. The win marked the first gold medal for any Canadian women's age-group team at the FIBA Americas Tournament.
If selected, the Pickering, Ontario, Canada, native would be the fourth Sooner to compete in the FIBA U19 Championships joining Gabbi Ortiz (2015, United States), Aaryn Ellenberg (2011, United States) and Danielle Robinson (2007, United States).
The FIBA U19 Women's Basketball Cup begins July 22 in Udine and Cividale Del Friuli, Italy.
