Sooners Take Second at Big 12 Championship

NORMAN – The Oklahoma rowing team finished the 2017 Big 12 Championship in second place. The regatta was held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The Sooners finished with 41 points on the day, seven points behind No. 3-ranked Texas. The Longhorns and Sooners were followed by Tennessee (35), Alabama (28), Kansas State (25), Kansas (21), Old Dominion (9) and West Virginia (9).

In addition, five Sooners were named to the All-Big 12 team for their efforts, including rowers Francesca Bratt, Kalie Heffernan, Carlijn Hutter, Abby Lange and coxswain Nicasia D'Allesandro.

OU posted three silver-medal finishes, including both the first and second varsity eights, while the first varsity four took third place.

Crossing the line in 6:26.997, the first varsity eight finished in second place behind the Longhorns. The crew topped Tennessee, Alabama, Kansas State and Kansas in the Grand Final.

The second varsity eight posted a time of 6:32.663 to finish just five seconds behind Texas to place second.

The Oklahoma first varsity four crossed the line in 7:14.829 to take third place behind Texas (7:06) and Alabama (7:13.496), while the second varsity four finished just six seconds behind the Longhorns to finish in second place with a time of 7:17.957.

The Sooner 3V8 finished in 6:50.987 to place fourth behind Texas, Alabama and Kansas State, respectively.

With Texas earning the automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA Championships, the Sooners would need to be selected as an at-large team, which is announced Tuesday at 5 p.m.
