NORMAN — After helping the Sooners to a hard-fought victory at No. 11 Michigan last weekend, Chayse Capps and Maggie Nichols have received Big 12 weekly awards, the conference announced Monday. Capps has been named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the fourth time this season, while Nichols is the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the sixth time.
Both Capps and Nichols scored 10.0s in the competition to aid the Sooners to the 197.575-197.525 road victory, with Nichols doing so on bars and Capps tallying one on beam.
With just one routine left for both teams in a close meet, Capps came in clutch when she anchored with a 10.0 on beam to seal the victory. The 10.0 was the second of her career on the event. Capps also contributed a 9.9 on floor, the second-best score on the event for the Sooners, a 9.85 on bars and a 9.8 on vault. The Plano, Texas, native tallied a 39.550 in the all-around to take second place. Capps has now scored at least a 9.9 on beam in six straight meets and at least a 9.9 on floor in four straight competitions.
Against Michigan, Nichols recorded her first 10.0 on bars and has now posted a perfect mark on all four events this season. She is the ninth collegiate gymnast to complete a “GymSlam” and the first since Florida's Bridget Sloan accomplished the feat in 2015. Nichols has five perfect scores in 2017, tying her with Haley Scaman for the most perfect marks in an OU career.
In 2017, the Sooners have earned 22 total awards from the Big 12. OU has received at least two awards from the Big 12 every week this season.
Up next, the Sooners conclude their regular season slate with a contest at No. 17 California. The meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT on Sunday in Berkeley, Calif. The meet will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
