Two Sooners Receive Conference Recognition

NORMAN — After picking up three more wins last weekend, two members of the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team have earned a pair of conference awards, announced Monday. Sophomore Nicole Lehrmann has been named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, while freshman Maggie Nichols is the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

Lehrmann and Nichols were impactful in OU's first-place finish over No. 8 Denver, No. 20 Nebraska and TWU on Friday night inside Lloyd Noble Center. Both were in OU's bars and beam lineups, helping the Sooners to totals of 49.550 on the two events. The scores tie for the ninth-highest total on bars and beam in program history.

In the quad meet, Lehrmann set or tied her season high on both bars and beam. The Austin, Texas, native scored a season-high-matching 9.925 on bars before recording a season-best 9.85 on beam. She tied for second on bars and sixth on beam in the meet. Lehrmann is currently tied for fifth in the nation on bars with an average of 9.900.

Nichols again posted the highest all-around score in the nation last weekend, recording a 39.850. She scored at least a 9.925 on all four events, including a perfect 10.0 on beam. The 10.0 was her first on beam and the second overall of her career. Nichols is the first OU freshman to ever score a 10.0 on beam and just the second Sooner ever to post a perfect total on two different events, joining Haley Scaman (three on floor, two on vault). The Little Canada, Minn., native added marks of 9.925 on vault, 9.95 on bars and 9.975 on floor as she swept the individual titles for the third consecutive meet.

So far this season, the Sooners have earned 13 total awards from the Big 12. This marks the first time Lehrmann has been honored in 2017, while it is Nichols' sixth overall recognition and four newcomer accolade.

Up next, Oklahoma will stay in its home state for the Perfect 10 Challenge, held at 6:45 p.m. CT on Friday, Feb. 10, inside Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
