BROOKINGS, S.D. – The No. 15 Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 19 South Dakota State, 20-19, by criteria of total match points scored from decisions, major decisions and technical falls. SDSU scored 50 match points, while the Sooners had 47.
The Sooners, who won five bouts in the contest including two by bonus points, fall to 8-5 on the season and 4-2 in Big 12 play.
Junior Mike Longo started the match off for the Sooners with a 9-1 major decision over SDSU's Henry Pohlmeyer. Longo struck first with a takedown and added an escape and a takedown in the second for a 5-0 advantage entering the final frame. Longo tacked on a stall point and the riding-time point for the bonus-point win.
At 157 pounds, No. 11 Clark Glass registered a 5-3 decision over Logan Peterson. Glass held a 3-0 advantage through two periods, but Peterson countered with an escape and a takedown to start the third and tie the bout. Glass escaped and secured the riding-time point to put the Sooners up, 7-3, through three matches.
No. 14 Yoanse Mejias kept it rolling for the Sooners, recording a 5-3 decision over Luke Zilverberg in the 165-pound matchup. Mejias tallied a takedown in the opening period and added an escape in the second to hold a 3-1 advantage entering the final frame. The junior added a late takedown in the third to hold on for the win.
In the heavyweight matchup, No. 20 Ross Larson made quick work of Alex Macki, recording his fourth consecutive win by fall in 48 seconds. Larson secured a quick takedown to lead 2-0 at the time of the pin.
At 125 pounds, Christian Moody gave the Sooners a 19-13 lead with an 8-5 decision over Ben Gillette. The bout was scoreless after the opening period, but Moody secured a reversal to start the second and tacked on a takedown for a 4-2 advantage through two. The redshirt freshman tallied two takedowns in the final period for the win.
In the 149-pound bout, No. 13 Davion Jeffries dropped an 11-9 decision to No. 19 Alex Kocer, and No. 15 David Kocer downed Matt Reed, 6-1, at 174 pound.
In the 184-pound matchup, Andrew Dixon lost to Martin Mueller by 7-5 decision, and No. 19 Brad Johnson dropped a 14-5 major decision to No. 7 Nate Rotert at 197 pounds. At 133 pounds, No. 2 Seth Gross pinned Trae Blackwell in 2:24.
The Sooners head to No. 18 Northern Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 5 for a noon matchup with Panthers. Oklahoma returns home on Feb. 10 for another Big 12 contest with Wyoming at noon inside McCasland Field House.
