NORMAN — For the fourth time this season, members of the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team have swept the Big 12 Conference's weekly honors. Seniors Chayse Capps (Gymnast of the Week) and McKenzie Wofford (Specialist of the Week) and freshman Jade Degouveia (Newcomer of the Week) all picked up accolades, the league announced Monday.
The Sooners are coming off a pair of victories over the weekend, defeating No. 7 Georgia, 197.675-196.925, on Senior Night on Friday before grabbing a 198.175-192.975 win at TWU on Sunday. The win at TWU marked the fourth time this season that OU has scored at least a 198.
In both meet, Capps secured the all-around titles with scores of 39.475 and 39.625, respectively. Of her eight scores between the two meets, five were 9.9s or higher. On Senior Night against Georgia, she also claimed a share of the beam title with a 9.95, finished third on floor with a 9.925 and fifth on vault with a 9.85. At TWU, Capps matched her career high with a 9.975 on floor and recorded a 9.925 on beam to share the event titles. She also tied her season high on bars with a 9.9.
Wofford started her weekend by scoring a then-season-high 9.95 on bars to snag the event title in the last home meet of her career. The McKinney, Texas, native followed that performance by anchoring on bars with a 10.0 at TWU, the first perfect mark of her career. Wofford was part of OU's bars lineup that scored a program-best 49.700 against the Pioneers.
Against Georgia, Degouveia debuted her Yurchenko 1 ½ vault for the first time this season, giving the Sooners a fourth 10.0 start value vault in their lineup. She scored a career-high 9.85 against the Bulldogs, matching her score with the same mark at TWU on Sunday.
In 2017, the Sooners have earned 20 total awards from the Big 12. This is the third time Capps has earned gymnast of the week accolades as a senior and the 14th overall honor of her career, while Wofford and Degouveia were both honored for the first time this year. In total, Wofford has snagged 12 conference awards in her career. OU has received at least two awards from the Big 12 every week this season.
This weekend, the Sooners will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face No. 11 Michigan. The meet is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on Saturday and will stream live on MGoBlueTV.
