NORMAN — After becoming the first squad to top 198 this season, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team rose to No. 1 nationally in this week's rankings. The Sooners hold an impressive average team score of 197.888 through the first two meets of the season.
OU totaled a big 198.025 against No. 8 UCLA on Sunday afternoon, adding that mark to a 197.750 score against then-No. 3 Alabama in the first meet.
LSU is ranked No. 2 with an average of 197.700, while Florida sits in third with a 197.350. Alabama (196.900) and Utah (196.763) are ranked No. 4 and 5, respectively.
As a team, OU is ranked in the top three nationally on every event, including three first-place rankings. The Sooners check in at No. 1 on bars (49.525 average), beam (49.413) and floor (49.513) and are third on vault (49.438).
In the national individual rankings, seven Sooners are in the top 25 on at least one event. A pair of Sooners in freshman Maggie Nichols and senior Chayse Capps come in first and second in the all-around standings with averages of 39.737 and 39.638, respectively.
Nichols and Capps are also ranked in the top seven on each event, both coming in seventh on vault (9.912). Nichols is currently tied for first on both bars and floor with averages of 9.95 and shares second on beam (9.925), while Capps is tied for eighth on bars (9.9), sits fifth on beam (9.913) and holds part of seventh on floor (9.912).
On vault, sophomore Brenna Dowell is also tied for ninth (9.9), and junior AJ Jackson shares 17th (9.887). Additionally, Dowell is tied for 24th on bars (9.862), while Jackson is No. 9 on floor with an average of 9.9.
Junior Stefani Catour is ranked on both of her events, sharing eighth on bars (9.9) and 21st on beam (9.863). On bars, sophomore Nicole Lehrmann is currently seventh with a 9.912 average, while senior Charity Jones comes in tied for 15th on floor (9.887).
This weekend, the Sooners embark on their first road trip of 2017, taking on Big 12 foe West Virginia. The meet is slated for Saturday at 6 p.m. CT in Morgantown, W. Va., and will stream through Mountaineer TV.
