January 13, 2017 | Athletics

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department will commemorate the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a special program to be held Monday at 7 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Sharp Hall inside OU's Catlett Music Center on the Norman campus.

As part of OU's commitment to enhancing community engagement with its student-athletes, the inaugural event will aim to educate and inspire attendees, as well as celebrate and reflect on the work and significance of Dr. King.

A portion of the program will highlight specific trail blazers within the OU Athletics family, going all the way back to the 1950s. Special attention will be devoted to the story of Prentice Gautt, OU's first African-American football player, and to the impact that athletics has had on the OU campus and surrounding community.

Speakers will include OU Athletics administrators Zac Selmon and Carol Ludvigson, esteemed educator Dr. George Henderson, OU Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione, and several student-athletes.

Doors will open at 6:30.
