Sooners Head to Pebble Beach for Season Opener
September 01, 2016 | Men's Golf
NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's golf team will begin its 2016-17 competition this weekend at the sixth annual Carmel Cup. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place Sept. 2-4 (Friday-Sunday) at the iconic par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The competitive event features eight squads, five of which are ranked in the top 20 of the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll. The Sooners are starting the year at No. 10, the best preseason ranking under eighth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl.
“We're ready to go,” Hybl said of the season opening-tournament. “I like our group that we're taking. We've got some firepower in our squad, and we just need to go out there and get off to a good start, and hopefully things will work to give ourselves a chance.”
Each team will compete with six golfers, and the low five scores will count toward the team total each round. OU's lineup for the Carmel Cup will showcase senior Max McGreevy, junior Grant Hirschman, sophomores Brad Dalke and Blaine Hale, redshirt freshman Quade Cummins and true freshman Riley Casey.
While Cummins and Casey are making their OU debuts, McGreevy, Hirschman, Dalke and Hale were all a part of the squad that qualified for match play at the 2016 NCAA Championships, marking the first time in program history that a team advanced to that stage of competition. Hybl said that the combination of new and returning competitors creates a unique approach to the new season.
“For the guys that were at last year's NCAAs, I think they're trying to carry on that momentum and build on it and build on it and create more confidence,” he said. “For the new guys, I think it's important for them to get off to good starts and understand what it means to go play high-level college golf.”
The Sooners' tee times are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CT Friday, and they will be paired with Georgia, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.
