Seven Named CGA All-America Scholar-Athletes

July 05, 2016 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Seven members of the 2016 NCAA National Champion Oklahoma men's gymnastics team were named All-America Scholar-Athletes, the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) announced Tuesday.

Josh Yee, Reese Rickett and Allan Bower earned first-team honors, maintaining grade-point averages of 3.5 or better. Genki Suzuki, Hunter Justus, Sergey Resnick and Alex Powarzynski were named second team All-America with GPAs of 3.2-3.499.

Additionally, as a team the Sooners maintained a collective GPA of 3.131, the eighth-best mark in the nation. Oklahoma's seven honorees are among 81 total first team All-America Scholar-Athletes honored by the CGA and 53 student-athletes earning second-team honors.

“Having our guys above a 3.1 is great to see,” Head coach Mark Williams said. “They are taking their academics as seriously as they take the athletics side of things. We have a great group of guys that understand that gymnastics as a profession is not very long lived, and they will likely have careers that are not gymnastics related after college. It's great to see them preparing for life and for the future from the academics side of things.”

The men's gymnastics team's success in the classroom is indicative of historic academic performance by all of Oklahoma's athletics teams. OU student-athletes achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher for an unprecedented ninth consecutive semester in the spring of 2016, posting a school-record-tying 3.06 combined GPA.

Three of Oklahoma's Scholar Athletes also earned All-America honors for their performances in the 2016 NCAA Championships. Of the first team Scholar-Athletes, Bower picked up three All-America honors, doing so on pommel horse, parallel bars and in the all-around.

Of the second team Scholar-Athletes, Justus earned All-America honors on rings and Resnick took home All-America honors on parallel bars.
