Introducing: Nancy Mulkey

NORMAN – The third and final subject of our summer “Introducing” series for women's basketball is freshman center Nancy Mulkey. The tallest signee in OU women's basketball history comes to Norman as one of the most coveted post prospects in the country last year.

She is used to being the tallest player on the court, but Mulkey is ready to make an impact on the floor for the Sooners as a freshman. In summer workouts, she has been introduced to the Division I level as she practices against the reigning Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year Vionise Pierre-Louis.

“The battle between ViVi and me has been fun. She backs me below the rim and just works her way down there. We give it to each other and we're always trying to make each other better," Mulkey said.

Ranked as the No. 4 post player in the country by the ESPN Hoop Gurlz, Mulkey helped Cypress Woods to its first-ever state championship as a junior, averaging 10.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game to earn all-state honors.

As a senior, she averaged 11.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.0 blocks a contest while earning an invite to the Jordan Brand Classic and the McDonald's All-American Game.

But for Mulkey, Oklahoma's family atmosphere is what made her want to become a Sooner.

“I chose Oklahoma because of the atmosphere," Mulkey stated. "It's family-oriented, the coaches, the players are all great. It's close to home, but not too close to home. I also wanted to major in special education and the program at OU is great.”

She comes from a basketball family. Her mom, Dolores, played collegiately at Georgia Tech, where she finished as the school's record-holder in scoring average (18.9 points per game), career field goal percentage (.593) and blocked shots (245). Both of her brothers are over seven feet tall as well.

While Mulkey's size is an asset on both ends of the floor, her skill set is broad. She has the ability to play away from the basket, but has shown the capability to make great passes and the range to knock down mid-range jumpers.

“I love to shoot. Most people think a 6-9 player can't shoot so I don't take it for granted. I shoot it when I can, if not I'll try to dump it down low to ViVi or another player in the post," Mulkey said.
