NORMAN — The list of accolades for the 2016 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team continues to grow as 11 members of the national championship squad garnered Scholastic All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). This total marks the most selections in a single season in program history.
OU has now captured at least five spots on the Scholastic All-America listing for 10 straight years. Under head coach K.J. Kindler's leadership, Oklahoma gymnasts have earned a total of 68 academic awards from the NACGC/W.
Chayse Capps and Maile'ana Kanewa led the way for the Sooners as they both earned their third consecutive Scholastic All-America recognitions. Rising juniors Samantha Craus and Stefani Catour secured the honor for the second straight season.
Departed senior Keeley Kmieciak picked up her first career Scholastic All-America honor. She was joined by first-year winners McKenzie Wofford, Reagan Hemry and Natalie Brown.
All three of OU's 2016 freshman class snagged the honor as Nicole Lehrmann, Alex Marks and Megan Thompson earned spots on the listing.
In order to earn NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors, a gymnast must attain a cumulative or yearly grade point average of 3.5 or better.
OU has flourished academically under Kindler's leadership. This season, six Sooners were named Academic All-Big 12 selections. In addition, the Sooners were one of four OU programs to be recognized for posting a perfect 1,000 multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) in April. This marked the third consecutive year that the team registered the perfect mark.
