Nichols, Dowell Compete at Olympic Trials

NORMAN — Oklahoma women's gymnasts Maggie Nichols and Brenna Dowell turned in strong performances at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, finishing in sixth and 10th place, respectively. The 14-athlete event was held Friday and Sunday inside SAP Center in San Jose, Calif.

Nichols finished with a two-day all-around score of 117.600. On Sunday, Nichols posted marks of 14.750 (FX), 15.100 (VT), 14.600 (UB) and 14.900 (BB) for a 59.050. Olympic Trials marked just Nichols' second competition and her first in the all-around since March 5 following knee injury.

Dowell finished with an overall 116.600, closing trials with scores of 14.500 (FX), 14.500 (FX), 15.100 (VT), 14.950 (UB) and 14.150 (BB).

After Friday's first day of competition, Nichols sat in eighth place in the all-around with a 58.250 after posting marks of 15.100 (VT), 14.550 (UB), 13.700 (BB) and 14.900 (FX), while Dowell posted a 57.900 to hold 10th. Dowell's scores for the evening were 14.850 (VT), 14.900 (UB), 13.600 (BB) and 14.550 (FX).

Last year, Dowell and Nichols competed together on the 2015 World Championships team that won a third straight gold medal for the United States. In her freshman season at OU, Dowell earned All-America honors on bars and floor at the 2015 NCAA Championships before deferring a season to pursue a spot on the World Championships team.
