Introducing: Kameron McGusty

June 30, 2016 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN - Freshman Kameron McGusty arrived on the University of Oklahoma campus in June ready to begin his collegiate basketball career playing for Lon Kruger's squad. The 6-5, 170-pound guard originally from Katy, Texas, was ranked as the 33rd and 40th overall recruit by Scout.com and ESPN.com, respectively. During his senior year of high school, he played at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kan., the alma mater of 2016 national player of the year Buddy Hield.

McGusty and the Sooners are currently participating in weekly summer workouts, where the team can congregate two hours per week under the direction of the coaching staff.

Summer workouts are vital for the whole team, but especially for incoming freshmen looking to find their way. The summer is also an opportune time for the newcomers to get acquainted with OU strength coach Bryce Daub.

“I've surprised myself within these past couple of practices,” frosh McGusty said. “Everything has turned out really good for me. I feel like from when I graduated to now, I've prepared myself well. I came in a lot bigger than I thought I was going to be. I've put on some weight within the past couple weeks I've been here.”

Coach Kruger has liked what he's seen from McGusty after just a few practices and sees him fitting in nicely with this young but talented Sooner team.

“He brings versatility," Kruger said. "He's an athletic wing that can slide out and possibly play a little combo-guard, little bit of point. More suited for the wing, running the floor, attacking the rim. He'll improve his 3-point shot every year.  I think he'll become a very good shooter. I like his range.”

Interests/hobbies:
“Hanging with my friends, playing 2K and getting in the gym with the guys. I've never been on a team like this that goes to the gym so much. I was a hard worker before, but now when you come here, you're definitely forced to get in the gym and get better.”

Favorite food:
“Shrimp, fried rice with no vegetables.”

 Least favorite food:
“Cheese.”

Best piece of advice you've received:
“Stay in the gym. At this level, there's no slacking. Stay in the gym and always work on your game.”

Celebrity crush:
“Kim Kardashian.”

People wouldn't believe me if I told them:
“I don't like cheese but I like pizza.”

Favorite Coach Kruger quote:
“'Be mature!' That's the best one I've heard so far.”

Best job you've had:
“Working for my uncle. He owns this snow cone stand called the 'Mean Green Snow Cone Machine." The snow cone trailer he bought has a big green Hulk on it.”

Favorite music artist:
“Without a doubt, Kanye West.”

Favorite NBA team:
“I don't really have a favorite team. I'm a LeBron fan so probably Cleveland (Cavaliers). But I'm from Houston so I'm a Rockets fan too.”

Favorite professional athlete:
“Kobe Bryant.”

Focus this summer:
“Becoming a great shooter. I think if I can expand my range a little bit, I'll be ready once the season comes around. As well as getting bigger and becoming more of a defensive stopper. I want to be able to guard another team's best player or scorer. I think those three things will help out my game this year.”

What I like about OU:
“The vibe of Norman. The people, how they act, how they treat you. Everybody is really genuine and nice to you.”
