Fifty-Five Sooners Named to Academic Rookie Team

NORMAN — Fifty-five University of Oklahoma student-athletes, the second-highest total among league institutions, have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team, the conference announced Thursday.
The team, which includes 445 Big 12 student-athletes, honors conference competitors who were new, incoming freshmen at their respective institutions during the 2015-16 season.
A league-best 12 Sooners were nominated to the listing with 4.0 GPAs, comprising nearly a third of the conference's 39 student-athletes who posted a perfect GPA in their rookie seasons.
OU's 4.0 GPA honorees included Jake Irvin (baseball), Alexandra Arndorfer (cross country), Morgan Long (cross country/track and field), Nicole Lehrmann (women's gymnastics), Andrea Batchev (rowing), Olivia Conway (rowing), Madeleine Lange (rowing), Kaylee Smith (rowing), Jordan Hobart (soccer), Paige Welch (soccer), Alexis Barnes (track and field) and Julia Hanks (track and field).
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen who have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athletes must have participated in at least one of their team's scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport's entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
