NORMAN – Chelsea Dungee is the first subject of our three-part series titled “Introducing”, which will spotlight Oklahoma women's basketball's three newcomers for the 2016-17 season.
The 5-11 freshman guard from Sapulpa, Okla., was ranked a four-star recruit by ESPN Hoop Gurlz and is quickly adjusting to life as a college student-athlete. The Sooners are beginning their second week of summer workouts after OU's players returned to campus June 12.
Dungee, who estimates she has attended over 50 games at the Lloyd Noble Center since her childhood, officially donned the Crimson and Cream last week as she attended her first class and began summer workouts with her new team. It's a moment she will never forget.
“I'm excited to be here because Oklahoma is a place I've always wanted to be,” Dungee explained. “I'm ready to get out on the floor and work. The transition to becoming a student-athlete has been great. I've only been here a week, but the coaching staff has been great and I'm excited to be a student-athlete at OU.”
In her senior season at Sapulpa High School, Dungee averaged 18.4 points per game along with 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals a contest. As a junior, she scored 16.5 points and helped Sapulpa to the first round of the state playoffs. She also has experience on the international stage. In 2014, she guided USA Basketball's U17 squad to a gold medal at the FIBA World Championships.
As she heads into her first season with the Sooners, Dungee is looking to provide an immediate impact and impress her new head coach while doing it.
“I think my strength and what we can use more of is the ability to get to the basket. I've got that quality and I think that's something I can help out with our team from the start. Coach Coale is a great coach, a great person and a great mentor for me to be around and I'm glad I get to play under her for the next four years.”
