TULSA, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team knocked off No. 12 Oklahoma State, 3-1, in front of 6,084 at ONEOK Field on Sunday afternoon. The Sooners improved to 26-24-1 overall and finished 11-13 in Big 12 play with their fifth series win of the conference season. The loss dropped to Cowboys to 32-17 and 13-8.

“We were carrying a lot of momentum from last night and we wanted to keep that momentum in our dugout,” started head coach Pete Hughes. “To do that you needed a really good start and we got that from Dylan [Grove]. He's grown-up and mature enough to be able to handle that and good enough stuff to be on that stage.”

The series victory for OU marks the first time since 1998 that the Sooners have claimed the conference series against Oklahoma State and Texas in the same season.

Oklahoma got most of the offense out of the way in the top of the first inning. A two-out rally started with a base hit by freshman right fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas). Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) followed with a single and junior left fielder Cody Thomas (Colleyville, Texas) drove in both with a stand-up triple to center.

Freshman right-hander Dylan Grove (Oklahoma City) took the mound for his first Big 12 start for the Sooners. He worked out of trouble in the first inning with an inning-ending double play with runners on the corners. Oklahoma State cut into the Sooner lead with a run in the third on a RBI-single from shortstop Donnie Walton, but another groundball-double play helped limit the damage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Grove was lifted after retiring the first two batters he faced. Junior lefty Austin Kerns (Owasso, Okla.) was brought on to pitch to OSU first baseman Dustin Williams, who went deep twice in the Cowboys' 10-9 win on Saturday night. The first offering from Kerns was drilled to the wall in center, but senior center fielder Alex Wise (Owasso, Okla.) was there to make the catch and end the inning.

Junior right-hander JB Olson (Shady Shores, Texas) came out of the Sooner bullpen to pitch the seventh. With one down, OSU center fielder Ryan Sluder singled, but was thrown out at second by Wise, trying to stretch the hit into a double. Olson would pick up three strikeouts in his two innings of relief.

The top of the ninth started with a walk and a sacrifice-bunt, but a failed stolen base attempt left the bases empty with two gone. Sophomore second baseman Kyle Mendenhall (Carlsbad, Calif.) then started the rally with his second single of the game. Wise followed with a base hit and freshman third baseman Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) drove in Mendenhall with a double into left-center.

Three outs away from the win, Neuse moved from shortstop to the mound. He put the Cowboys down in order with three fly ball outs to record his fifth save of the season. Grove (2-0) got the win in 5.2 innings of work. He scattered four this and two walks with three strikeouts and one run against him.

Right-hander Trey Cobb (4-7) took the loss for Oklahoma State. He surrendered two runs on four hits and three walks to go with eight strikeouts.

For the game, OU outhit OSU, 9-5. Thomas, Mendenhall and Harris all recorded two-hit games.

The Sooners return to action on Tuesday against former Big 12 rival Missouri at 4:00 pm in Columbia.
