OKLAHOMA CITY – The University of Oklahoma baseball team opened the Bedlam Series with a 9-1 win over No. 12 Oklahoma State in front of 7,302 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Friday night. The Sooners improved to 25-23-1 overall and 10-12 in the Big 12, while the Cowboys fell to 31-16 and 12-7 after a rain delay-lengthened ballgame.

Freshman right-hander Jake Irvin (Bloomington, Minn.) surrendered a run in the second and worked around leadoff-singles in each of the first three innings before settling down. He sat down eight in a row before the game went into a rain delay that kept him from returning to the mound. Irvin (5-1) allowed just the one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Junior designated hitter Cody Thomas (Colleyville, Texas) provided the punch in the Oklahoma offense with five RBI on the night. Trailing by a run in the top of the fourth, Thomas went deep for his sixth home run of the year on a three-run shot to right-center. Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) reached ahead of him on a single, the Sooners first hit of the night, and junior first baseman Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) walked.

In the top of the sixth, freshman left fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) hit a leadoff-double and Neuse reached on a fielder's choice that saw Walker advance to third. O'Brien walked again and Thomas followed with a two-run double into the right-center gap to spread Oklahoma's lead to 5-1. Two more Sooner runs came in on a pair of wild pitches from OSU right-hander Thomas Hatch.

The tarp went on the field in the sixth with one aboard and one down for Oklahoma. The game resumed two hours and eight minutes later at 10:25 pm.

Right-hander Thomas Hatch (5-2), who was lifted prior to the delay, was the pitcher of record on the short-end. Thomas' home run off him yielded the first earned runs he had allowed in 38 2/3 innings of work. Hatch gave up four runs on seven hits and four walks in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts.

The Sooners tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Senior right fielder Alex Wise (Neosho, Mo.) extended his hit streak to 11 games and junior center fielder Ben Hollas (Longview, Texas) walked. The two moved up a base and scored on a single through the right side by Neuse.

Senior right-hander Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) finished the night for OU with the final four outs as he struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

Game two is scheduled for a 7:30 pm first pitch Saturday night from ONEOK Field in Tulsa.
