NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team held its third annual "Shave for the Brave" event after Thursday's practice at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Sooner players, coaches and support staff shaved their head after a fundraising effort through the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise awareness and money for research to beat childhood cancer.
Through Thursday evening, the team had fundraised $21,409. Proceeds from the event are shared between Vs. Cancer and the OU Children's Hospital.
"They see it firsthand, because we're in [OU] Children's Hospital," head coach Pete Hughes said of his team's willingness to participate. "For us, it's a way for our guys to understand a bigger issue and be a small part of it. We talk about awareness, but awareness doesn't cure it; money does. We do a great job in raising money as well. We do it humbly. All our guys do."
The Vs. Cancer Foundation was founded by Chase Jones, a former University of North Carolina baseball player, who was diagnosed with Stage IV brain cancer as a college freshman at the age of 18. Since beating cancer, Jones has worked with multiple childhood cancer organizations before establishing the Vs. Cancer Foundation in 2012.
Across the country, 73 teams took part in this years cause. The Sooners ranked second after raising the most money out of 73 teams in 2015. In three years, Oklahoma has totaled $80,090.
On hand for the event was Tanner Huddleston, a former classmate and teammate of sophomore infielder Qiun Walbergh. Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia survivor last year, he had the honor of shaving Walbergh's head and addressing the team.
"It's a very special moment," stated Walbergh. "He's one of my very good friends. It's awesome to see how he's fighting.
"This team embraces it greatly. Nobody stood aside and didn't shave their head this year. They al lget the purpose and embrace it big time."
Shave for the Brave has become one of the marquee events on the calendar for the Oklahoma baseball team as the team works toward its 19 Ways community service campaign.
