Legendre Competes Internationally

OSIJEK, Croatia – University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics assistant coach Steven Legendre competed at the 2016 Grand Prix Osijek in Osijek, Croatia on Thursday as the event began with qualifying on floor, rings and pommel horse.

Legendre, an alternate for Team USA at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, is ramping up for another Olympic run this summer. OU's first-year assistant has already qualified to the U.S. Senior National Team with his performance at the Winter Cup in February.

Legendre paced the field, which includes athletes from more than 30 countries, on floor exercise Thursday. He scored a 15.200, one of just three scores in the 15s, to qualify for the weekend's event final in first place. He also had a strong showing on rings where he scored 14.500, qualifying in eighth place.

Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams, who is in attendance as Legendre's coach, was pleased with the his assistant's effort on day one.

"It was a good first day for Team USA," Williams said. "Steve did a great floor set that our team at home would be proud of."

In addition to Legendre, prospective Olympians Paul Ruggeri and Sean Melton are also in competition this weekend. After day one, Ruggeri is second on floor (15.150) and Melton is fifth on rings (15.150).

Competition continues on Friday with qualifying for vault, parallel bars and high bar. Event Finals will take place on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. Live scoring, as well as more information about the competition, is available here.
