Moldauer Named NCAA Gymnast of the Week

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics freshman Yul Moldauer was named NCAA Gymnast of the Week on Thursday, adding another honor to his impressive 2016 haul.

Moldauer helped the Sooners to their 10^th national title over the weekend, while also claiming the all-around national championship with a total of 89.100. Moldauer is just the second freshman in NCAA history to win the all-around, joining Michigan's Sam Mikulak, a three-time NCAA all-around champion and 2012 Olympian.

“Yul had an amazing freshman year,” head coach Mark Williams said. “From the first meet of the season to the last, he did everything we asked him to do. He worked hard and remained humble throughout the process. It's quite an honor to be only the second freshman to win the all-around in history. He is in good company with Sam.

As he has been all year, Moldauer was a vital part of OU's success at the 2016 NCAA Championship. Moldauer earned All-America status, achieved by placing in the top eight of an event, on floor (15.000), parallel bars (15.250) and in the all-around. Moldauer also added high marks on rings (14.850) and vault (15.000) to help lift Oklahoma to its championship total of 443.400.

Moldauer was also named NCAA Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 21 after the Sooners' season opener at the Rocky Mountain Opener. The Arvada, Colo., native paced the Sooners with 16 event titles in 2016. Eight of those titles came on parallel bars where he topped the 16-point mark three times, including an NCAA season-high 16.100 performance at the MPSF Championship. That total was good enough to earn Moldauer the conference title.

OU fans and members of the university community are invited to a public celebration honoring both the men's and women's gymnastics national championship squads on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Union Courtyard, located on the west side of the Oklahoma Memorial Union.

OU men's head coach Mark Williams and women's head coach K.J. Kindler will address the crowd, and OU's band and spirit squads will be there to help celebrate the teams' accomplishments. Fans will also have the opportunity to take photos with the national championship trophies.
