NORMAN — The Oklahoma gymnastics programs made history last Saturday, becoming the first teams to win both the men's and women's NCAA titles in the same season. Now OU fans and members of the university community are invited to a public celebration honoring those two championship squads on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Union Courtyard, located on the west side of the Oklahoma Memorial Union.
OU men's head coach Mark Williams and women's head coach K.J. Kindler will address the crowd, and OU's band and spirit squads will be there to help celebrate the teams' accomplishments. Fans will also have the opportunity to take photos with the national championship trophies.
Bart Conner, a member of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, will serve as the emcee. Conner, the 1981 Nissen Emery Award winner, was a 14-time All-American at Oklahoma and a member of the 1977 and 1978 national championship teams. Additionally, he represented the United States in three different Olympics (1976, 1980, 1984), winning gold as a team and on parallel bars in 1984.
Last weekend's men's title was the second in a row for the program and 10th overall. The women claimed their second national title in the last three years.
