Academic Honors Pour in For Sooners

NORMAN – Five members of the 2016 NCAA National Champion Oklahoma men's gymnastics team were named MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athletes, the conference announced Tuesday.

Sophomore Hunters Justus, juniors Allan Bower, Thao Hoang and Reese Rickett as well as senior Josh Yee all earned the award for Oklahoma. Those five student-athletes and senior Sergey Resnick also earned places on the All-Big 12 At-Large First Team.

The academic honors add to an already historic week as OU finished its perfect season with a nearly 10-point victory at the 2016 NCAA Championships. It marked the largest winning margin in the modern scoring era.

In addition to the team title, freshman Yul Moldauer won the all-around national title and junior Colin Van Wicklen claimed the crown on floor. In total, seven different Sooners combined to earn 16 All-America honors.

MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, be at least a sophomore academically, completed one full academic year at the institution prior to the season and competed in fifty percent or of the season's competitions.

To qualify for the All-Big 12 At-Large First Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.20 or higher GPA either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
