NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's tennis team fell to No. 33 TCU, 4-1, at Headington Family Tennis Center on Friday evening.
The Sooners (7-11, 2-4 Big 12) began the day by dropping both doubles matches. Senior Emma Devine and sophomore Lily Miyazaki fell first to 27th-ranked Seda Arantekin and Caroline Wegner, 6-2, at No. 1. The Sooners battled back on court three as sophomores Christie Brigante and Malene Stripp took the match, 6-2, over the Horned Frogs' Marie Norris and Alexis Pereira.
The doubles point came down to the No. 3 line. OU's duo of sophomore Simran Sethi and junior Mimi Fotopoulos dropped its early lead, and the match, 7-5, to TCU's Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Mia King.
Head coach Dave Mullins liked what he saw in today's match.
"Another really good effort," he said. "It was a fun match to be a part of. In doubles, we have some opportunities. We have a couple match points and I think that's been the story of our year. When we get in those situations, we haven't raised our game once really. Other teams have raised their game and are willing to go for the shots a little bit more and we're kind of hoping our opponents will lose it. We're not really willing to go and win it. Sometimes, we drop our level."
The Horned Frogs (12-4, 4-2 Big 12) carried the momentum into singles plaly as TCU took the first singles match of the evening when Garrido-Rivas topped OU's Sethi 6-1, 6-3, on court four.
At the No. 3 position, OU's Fotopoulos fell to Arantekin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
The Horned Frogs' clinched the match with a victory at the No. 5 line. TCU's Aleksandra Zenovka won, 7-5, 7-5, over the Sooners' Brigante.
When play was abandoned, OU's Stripp was down 3-4 in the final set at the No. 6 line. On court one, Miyazaki was down 6-1 in a second-set tiebreaker to TCU's Norris. OU's Devine battled back from a three-game deficit in the second set to force a third set. She was leading TCU's Wegner, 1-0, in the third.
"I'm not surprised anymore," Mullins said of Devine. "I'm never surprised. We know that Emma is in every match. She gives us a chance every time she goes out there. It doesn't matter what the score line is. It doesn't matter, the type of opponents' game or anything like that. She's just going to find a way to battle and compete and keep herself in the match."
Mullins is happy with the progress the Sooners are making.
"At least we're putting ourselves in position [to win]," he said. "We weren't putting ourselves in position four or five weeks ago. We're putting ourselves in position which is promising, but at some point we need to relax in those moments and take advantage of it."
The Sooners are back in action Sunday for Senior Day as they host their final home match of 2016 against No. 14 Texas Tech.
