Oyama Named Nissen-Emery Award Finalist

NORMAN – University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics senior Kanji Oyama has been named one of eight finalists for the Nissen-Emery Award, given annually to the top senior gymnast in the NCAA. Considered the Heisman Trophy of collegiate gymnastics, the Nissen-Emery Award will be presented at the 2016 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship Banquet in Columbus, Ohio.

Oyama is one of three seniors on the Sooners' roster and is a three-time All-American. During the 2015 season Oyama scored the nation's highest all-around score when he posted a career-high 91.000 in the Sooners' meet against Michigan. He also claimed the MPSF vault titles in 2014 and 2015.

This season Oyama claimed the rings title in the Sooners' tri-meet against Iowa and Cal and also took home the high bar and all-around titles against Nebraska. The senior was named the MPSF Gymnast of the Week after his performance against the Cornhuskers. He ranks seventh nationally in all-around scoring with a three-score average of 86.900. Oyama is also tied for eighth nationally on rings (15.133).

Oklahoma boasts seven Nissen-Emery winners in its rich history with three of those coming under head coach Mark Williams. The Sooners' most recent winner was current assistant coach Steven Legendre, who won the award in 2011.  

The other finalists for the 2016 Nissen-Emery Award are Ethan Lottman of Nebraska, Logan Bradley of Illinois, Jesse Glenn of the United State Military Academy, Kevin Wolting of California, Brian Knott of Stanford, Trevor Howard of Penn State and Jack Boyle of Iowa.

Oklahoma concludes the home portion of its 2016 schedule on Saturday when it hosts No. 2 Stanford at McCasland Field House for a 5 p.m. meet. Tickets are available for purchase online or by calling the OU Athletics Tickets Office at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at (800) 456-GoOU.
