BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team defeated CSU Bakersfield, 6-3, at Hardt Field on Friday night for its fourth consecutive win. The Sooners lifted their record to .500 at an even 9-9-1, while the Roadrunners dropped to 5-12.
Oklahoma used the long ball, including two home runs and a triple, to power past CSUB. Freshman catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got the scoring started with a solo home run to lead off the top of the third.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) led off with a single. Junior second baseman Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) followed with a two-run home run to right field to tie the game, 3-3. The home run was the third of the season for Flansburg.
Freshman center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas) then jumpstarted a second rally for the Sooners in the sixth with a one-out single. Junior Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) came off the bench for a pinch-hit at-bat. He lined a base hit that got past the diving left fielder and to the track for a RBI-triple that scored Walker and gave Oklahoma a 4-3 lead. The Sooners got one more run in the inning as O'Brien scored on a sacrifice-fly from senior left fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas).
Junior right-hander Alec Hansen (Loveland, Colo.) pitched just 4.1 innings in the start for Oklahoma. He tossed 102 pitches and was pulled with two on and one out after back-to-back walks in the fifth. Both inherited runners scored against freshman RHP Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.) and senior lefty Shawn Hunter (Fort Supply, Okla.) came on to finish the inning.
Hansen surrendered three runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out six. Hunter (1-1) earned the win in 1.1 innings of relief. He struck out two of the four batters faced. Neuse moved to the mound for the ninth and earned his third save of the season and second in as many games as he struck out a pair.
Right-hander Andrew Hansen (1-3) went 5.1 innings in the start for the Roadrunners. He allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out four.
The Sooners and CSUB wrap up the series with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm CT on Saturday afternoon. Junior right-hander Jake Elliott (Coppell, Texas) gets the ball in game one for Oklahoma.
