FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team edged Fresno State for a 3-2 win at Beiden Field on Tuesday night in the first of five games from California this week. The win moved the Sooners to 7-9-1, while the Bulldogs, who were previously 9-0 at home, to 11-6 overall.

Oklahoma, which had previously lost four one-run games, picked up its first one-run win of the season. Fresno State got a run in the first and third inning without the benefit of a hit off of freshman right-hander Kyle Tyler (Oklahoma City). The Sooners rallied to tie the game in the fourth and took their first and only lead of the night in the fifth.

Junior shortstop Jack Flansburg (Orange, Calif.) got aboard with a one-out single to left-center and senior right fielder Alex Wise (Neosho, Mo.) followed with a single through the left side to put two on. Junior first baseman Austin O'Brien (Owasso, Okla.) then delivered Flansburg to the plate as the tying run with two down on a line drive single into center field. Oklahoma would end up loading the bases with two away, but settled for the lone run.

In the top of the fifth, freshman catcher Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led off with a hustle double down the left field line and was sacrificed to third. After Flansburg was walked with two outs, Wise singled up the middle to score DeRenzo and give OU a 3-2 lead.

Oklahoma's bullpen took over from there. Freshman right-hander Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.) pitched three-scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and didn't walk anyone. Madden (1-0) retired eight in a row after allowing a single and pitched through the sixth and seventh innings on a total of 12 pitches. Junior right-hander JB Olson (Shady Shores, Texas) closed the door for his second save of the year by pitching a clean eighth and ninth. He allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth, but stymied the threat by starting a 1-6-3 double play.

The Sooners' first run of the night came on a solo home run in the second inning by freshman center fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas). Wise added a 2-for-4 night as OU outhit Fresno State, 7-3.

Left-hander Anthony Arias (2-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk in 0.2 innings of relief. Right-hander Edgar Gonzalez was lifted after the fourth as he surrendered two runs on four hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts.

Oklahoma is back in action on Thursday night at CSU Bakersfield for a 8:00 pm CT first pitch. Senior right-hander Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) is slated to make his first start on the mound this season.
