DOUBLE UP
The No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team is set for two meets this weekend, starting on the road before returning to Norman for a Big 12 home contest. The Sooners first compete in a 7 p.m. CT quad-meet at Texas Woman's University on Friday with No. 10 Auburn and Illinois State. OU then hosts No. 23 West Virginia at 1:45 p.m. CT on Sunday inside Lloyd Noble Center in its “Favorite Things” meet. Friday's trip to Texas is the second of four potential ones for the Sooners this season, with the first being last weekend's Metroplex Challenge. The Big 12 Championship (Frisco) and NCAA Championships (Fort Worth) will also be held in the state of Texas.
TOPPING 197
OU has posted four straight 197-plus performances and is coming off its best mark of the season, turning in a 197.550 in a first-place finish at the competitive five-team Metroplex Challenge last Saturday. The Sooners have also posted scores of 197.475 (vs. Iowa State and Arizona State, Jan. 22), 197.125 (vs. California and Texas Woman's University, Jan. 15) and 197.050 (at Arkansas, Jan. 17). OU's 197.550 and 197.475 stand as the third- and fifth-best scores in the country this season, respectively. The Sooners join Florida and Alabama as the only schools to post a score of 197 or higher so far this season.
NEW LINEUP, NO PROBLEM
In the 2016 season, the Sooners returned just half of their bars lineup from the previous campaign, but Oklahoma has not missed a beat. The Sooners have been incredibly strong on the event, currently sitting in second place nationally as a team with a 49.360 average. At the Metroplex Challenge last Saturday, the Sooners exploded for a 49.525 for the rotation, matching the highest score in the nation on bars so far this season and tying the eighth-best mark in program history. Individually, junior McKenzie Wofford boasts the nation's top average this season with a 9.930 and has posted at least a 9.9 in all five of OU's competitions, while senior Keeley Kmieicak is tied for 17th with a 9.860.
RANKINGS UPDATE
As a team, OU is ranked in the top six nationally on every event, including three No. 2 rankings. The Sooners remained at No. 2 on bars (49.360), vault (49.305) and beam (49.280). On floor, OU used its season-best 49.500 at the Metroplex Challenge to jump a spot to No. 6 with a 49.240 average. Individually, Keeley Kmieciak (9th AA, T-24th VT, T-17th UB, T-12th BB), Chayse Capps (13th AA, 6th BB), McKenzie Wofford (T-1st, UB), AJ Jackson (T-8th VT, 17th FX), Haley Scaman (T-17th VT, 11th FX) and Charity Jones (T-24th VT) are all ranked in the top 25.
A GLANCE AT NO. 10 AUBURN
The Tigers enter Friday's meet with a 2-3 overall record, including a 1-3 mark against SEC foes, and are ranked No. 10 with a 196.080 scoring average. Auburn has picked up wins over Oregon State and Kentucky this season. Most recently, the Tigers fell 196.600-195.975 at Arkansas. Jeff Graba is in his sixth season as head coach of the Tigers.
A GLANCE AT ILLINOIS STATE
The Redbirds are coming off their first dual win of the season, defeating UIC last week, 194.175-191.450. Illinois State, which is led by eighth-year head coach Bob Conkling, has a 3-8 overall record this year.
A GLANCE AT TWU
The Pioneers are coming off a second-place finish with a 191.275 at a quad meet with San Jose State, Seattle Pacific and William & Mary. This will mark the second time OU and TWU have met this season. In the first contest, the Sooners defeated the Pioneers and Cal in a tri-meet in Norman on Jan. 15. Lisa Bowerman is in her fifth season as the head coach of TWU.
A GLANCE AT NO. 23 WEST VIRGINIA
Big 12 opponent West Virginia currently holds a 2-2 overall record, most recently picking up a pair of wins in a tri-meet over No. 18 New Hampshire and William & Mary. The Mountaineers are led by fifth-year head coach Jason Butts. Before coming to Norman, WVU is set for a conference contest at Iowa State.
• The Sooners swept the Big 12 weekly awards on Feb. 2, with junior Chayse Capps being named the Gymnast of the Week, junior McKenzie Wofford earning her third Event Specialist of the Week accolade and freshman Nicole Lehrmann snagging the Newcomer of the Week honor.
