NORMAN – Kaylon Williams made her final home game in the Crimson and Cream one to remember. The senior poured in a career-high 32 points to propel the No. 23/23 Oklahoma women's basketball team to an 85-54 victory over Iowa State on Saturday afternoon inside Lloyd Noble Center.
Williams started off the game scoring on each of OU's first three possessions and went on to shoot 13 of 14 from the floor in the ballgame. She bested her previous career high of 25 points with a basketball with 1:06 remaining in the third quarter. The Midwest City, Okla., native also tallied five rebounds and added a pair of steals.
"I like the way we played. Iowa State is a little shorthanded right now, that's not a secret," head coach Sherri Coale said following the win. "They've had a rough year with off-the-floor stuff and our thoughts and prayers are with them. But I loved the way we trusted one another today. Offensively, we trusted one another to be at the right place at the right time, and defensively we trusted one another and helped, and I thought the connectedness we showed today was the biggest difference.”
The Sooners (19-9, 10-7 Big 12) shot 60 percent from both the field (33-of-55) and from 3-point range (6-of -10) in the contest while limiting the Cyclones (13-15, 5-12 Big 12) to 32.7 percent (17 of 52) shooting. OU outrebounded Iowa State by a 37-26 mark and outscored the Cyclones 42-20 in the paint.
Redshirt junior Peyton Little reached double figures in scoring for the 40th time as a Sooner, contributing 11 points against the Cyclones. She also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Sophomore Gabbi Ortiz and junior T'ona Edwards each recorded nine points, and junior Gioya Carter matched her career best with six assists.
The Sooners jumped out to a comfortable 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter behind 11 points from Williams. OU took a 41-32 advantage into halftime and pulled away from the Cyclones in the third quarter, outscoring them by a 28-12 clip in the frame to lead 69-44.
Iowa State was led by sophomore Emily Durr, who contributed a career-high 24 points, four rebounds and three steals, while redshirt sophomore Jadda Buckley scored 16 points for the Cyclones.
The win gave Oklahoma its first season sweep over the Cyclones since 1994. The Sooners' 31-point victory was the largest margin victory by OU since 1985 against Iowa State.
Up next, OU will close the regular season at Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday before heading to Oklahoma City for the Big 12 Championships.
