NORMAN — Competing in five-up-five-count format for the first time this season, the top-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics team bested No. 4 Minnesota 447.550-431.100 inside the McCasland Field House on Saturday night. The Sooners' team score was their second-highest total of the year.
“We had a good start,” head coach Mark Williams said. “Five-up-five-count has its own challenges but I was actually pretty happy overall. We handled pommel horse well and rings were awesome. We hit great sets and every guy who counted for the team landed dismounts. A little rough on vault, so we have a little work to do there but p-bars was not bad overall. I know there are a little bit more nerves going on knowing the five-up-five-count, so we need to do a little better job handling that, especially with Stanford coming in next weekend.”
Oklahoma (9-0, 2-0) also took home five event titles and won the all-around on the night. Freshman Yul Moldauer won floor (15.900) and parallel bars (15.750), redshirt senior Sergey Resnick took pommel horse (15.400), junior Thao Hoang won rings (15.550), and junior Colin Van Wicklen claimed the high bar (15.500) and all-around (86.500) titles.
OU kicked off the meet on floor where, without the benefit of a sixth competitor, it turned in a team total of 77.800, just one tenth off its season high, to set the tone early. Freshman Levi Anderson (15.450), sophomore Hunter Justus (15.750) and Moldauer all notched career-best performances in the event. Moldauer's total tied Van Wicklen's Rocky Mountain Open score for the best OU floor routine of the year. Van Wicklen anchored the Sooners with a 15.850 to cap off Oklahoma's sensational floor performance.
Already sporting a healthy lead, OU moved to the pommel horse for the second rotation. The Sooners posted a season-high 73.200 on the apparatus and were paced by a career-best 15.300 from Resnick in the No. 2 position. Moldauer followed Resnick with a career high of his own, posting 14.850, before junior Allan Bower anchored the rotation with a 15.250.
OU continued its season-long dominance on rings in the third rotation. All five Sooner gymnasts stuck their dismounts and each earned at least a 15.000 to push OU to a team total of 76.150, its best of the year. Hoang led the way for OU with a career-best 15.550. Moldauer also turned in an exceptional routine, scoring 15.400 to tie his own career high. At the halfway point of the meet, the Sooners had opened up a lead of nearly 11 points.
“The first three events were awesome,” Bower said. “Vault was big and then the p-bars were a little bit shakier, so it kind of gradually went down, but in the end on high bar we picked it up and everybody finished well.”
The fourth rotation was a bit of a speed bump for the Sooners, who scored a 72.950, their lowest total of the year. Yee turned in the best vault for Oklahoma with a 15.100. Bower was also strong, scoring a 15.050. Oklahoma would rebound in the fifth frame, scoring a 74.500 on parallel bars. The first four Sooners all posted solid totals in the high 14s before Moldauer capped the rotation, as he has all season, with a huge routine of 15.750.
The Sooners regained the energy they had early in the meet with a spirited rotation on high bar. OU got a career-best performance from Van Wicklen (15.500) and strong routines from Anderson (15.200) and Yee (14.850). When the chalk had settled, Oklahoma had earned a 72.950 to deliver a team total of 447.550.
“I still feel like we haven't put our best team out there yet,” Williams said. “We are hovering around the 445 average and anything above that has been better, so I am happy with that. We still have some individual issues to work on, but we're looking forward to next weekend. Looks like having Stanford in our place then having to go to their place for conference will be nice back and forth before NCAAs.”
Up next for Oklahoma is what could be the best collegiate meet of the 2016 regular season as No. 2 Stanford travels to Norman. The Cardinal is the only other team in the nation to have topped the 447-point mark this year. The teams are slated for a 5 p.m. CT meet inside the McCasland Field House.
