ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team used a gritty performance to secure a 197.375-196.750 victory over No. 10 Georgia inside Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday afternoon in front of a loud crowd of 10,224.
OU (17-1 overall) grabbed three team event titles on vault, bars and beam in the win over the Gymdogs (4-4 overall), who were coming off victories over SEC foes in then-No. 1 Florida and then-No. 5 LSU.
Additionally, three Sooners earned individual crowns on Saturday. With scores of 9.95, junior McKenzie Wofford, sophomore AJ Jackson and junior Chayse Capps snagged the bars, vault and beam crowns, respectively.
Georgia's Brandie Jay, Mary Beth Box and Gigi Marino shared the floor title with 9.9s, while Jay also took the all-around title with a 39.550.
"Tonight was a test for this team," OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. "They were incredibly resilient throughout the meet and pushed through all four events. They handled the crowd and the atmosphere like veterans."
The Sooners started the contest on bars, where Wofford put an exclamation point on the rotation with a stuck landing and season-high-matching 9.95 in the anchor spot. Freshman Nicole Lehrmann and senior Keeley Kmieciak recorded identical marks of 9.9 on the apparatus, while sophomore AJ Jackson and Capps both added scores of 9.85. Senior Haley Scaman scored a 9.8 in the No. 4 spot.
The Sooners finished bars with a score of 49.450, their fifth-best score of the season and highest in a non-neutral site road competition, to take the early lead over Georgia. UGA tallied a 49.275 for the vault rotation, paced by a 9.9 from Jay in the anchor spot.
On vault, the Sooners got another huge anchor routine, this one from Jackson, who soared to a career-high-matching 9.95. Scaman contributed a 9.875 in the No. 5 spot on vault, Kmieciak scored a 9.85 and freshman Alex Marks and Capps both tallied marks of 9.825. Jones started the rotation with a 9.8.
The Gymdogs used a bars score of 49.400, which included 9.9 performanes from Jay and Brittany Rogers, to narrow the OU advantage to 98.775-98.675 following the second rotation. Georgia would get no closer to the Sooners the rest of the meet.
Sophomore Natalie Brown's 9.85 paced the Sooners on floor. Capps and Scaman both recorded 9.825s, while the trio of Kmieciak, Jones and Jackson all scored 9.8s. OU recorded a 49.100 on the event, but it was enough to stretch its lead after Georgia posted a 48.675 on beam. The Sooners took a 147.875-147.350 advantage into the fourth and final rotation of the afternoon.
"We were all a bit puzzled through the floor rotation, but our team stayed focused and pushed through," Kindler said.
In its final rotation, the Sooners turned in a season-best performance on beam, scoring a 49.500 to secure the victory. Georgia closed the meet with a 49.400 mark on floor.
Capps picked up OU's third 9.95 of the night, this time as the anchor on beam. Kmieciak started the Sooners off on the right note with a 9.85 in the leadoff spot, and Lehrmann followed with a career-high-matching 9.875. In just her fourth appearance on the event, sophomore Stefani Catour stuck her landing and earned a career-best 9.9 in the No. 3 spot to continue OU's strong start on beam. In the No. 4 spot, Brown contributed a big 9.925, which matched her career-best mark, and Jones added a 9.825 for OU.
"The team turned in its best beam performance of the year. They were so very aggressive with everything on the line," Kindler shared.
"I continue to be impressed with this team's ability to handle pressure of all kinds, internal and external," Kindler continued. "Tonight we played to win, and it paid off."
The Sooners return to Norman to host No. 3 Michigan at 6:45 p.m. CT on Friday, Feb. 26, inside Lloyd Noble Center. Tickets are available for purchase online or by calling the OU Athletics Tickets Office at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at (800) 456-GoOU.
