NORMAN — Following an impressive showing at the Metroplex Challenge last weekend, three members of the No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team have swept the Big 12 weekly awards, the conference announced Tuesday.
Junior Chayse Capps picked up the Gymnast of the Week award, while junior McKenzie Wofford was named the Event Specialist of the Week and freshman Nicole Lehrmann earned Newcomer of the Week accolades.
The trio aided the Sooners to a season-high 197.550 at the Metroplex Challenge, where Oklahoma secured first place and defeated No. 6 LSU, No. 12 Stanford, No. 16 Missouri and Washington. Capps, Wofford and Lehrmann also all competed on bars, helping the Sooners to a 49.525 total on the event, which ties the best score in the nation this season and is tied for the eighth-best score in OU program history.
Capps posted a career-best 39.575 in the all-around to take second place out of 10 athletes at the five-team event. The Plano, Texas, native matched her season-high marks on vault (9.875) and bars (9.925) and set a season best on floor (9.875) at the meet. Her 9.925 on bars matched her career high. Capps is ranked No. 13 nationally in her first season competing as an all-arounder and currently sits in sixth on beam with a 9.890 average.
In the anchor spot on bars, Wofford posted a season-high-matching 9.95 on bars in the anchor spot to grab a share of the event title. The junior, who is ranked No. 1 nationally on bars for the fourth straight week with a 9.930 average, has scored at least a 9.9 in all five of OU's meets this season.
On Saturday, Lehrmann matched her career high of 9.9 on bars in the No. 2 spot in OU's lineup to tie for fifth on the event and added a 9.85 on beam.
With the honors, the Sooners have now picked up seven weekly conference accolades this season. The recognition is the first of the season for both Capps and Lehrmann and the third of the year for Wofford.
