Oklahoma Downed by North Texas, 4-1

DENTON, Texas – The No. 36 Oklahoma women's tennis team fell to North Texas, 4-1, on the road Sunday.

The Sooners (3-3) began the day by dropping both doubles matches. Sophomores Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi were leading 5-2 on court one when the No. 2 and 3 matches finished. Juniors Ann Pepper and Mimi Fotopouos fell first, 6-0, to the Mean Green's Kamilla Galieva and Alexis Thoma. On court two, sophomore Christie Brigante and senior Zita Engbroks were defeated 6-2 by the Mean Green's Agustina Valenzuela and Nastya Shestakova.

"This weekend has been nothing like anything I have ever experienced as a coach," OU head coach David Mullins said. "We had a series of health misfortunes that were out of our control. Until we can get healthy, we aren't going to be able to compete with anyone on our schedule."

North Texas took the first singles match when Valenzuela topped Pepper 6-2, 6-0 on court six. Miyazaki made the match 2-1 with a victory at the No. 1 position, beating Maria Kononova 6-2, 6-2.

The Mean Green won two more matches to clinch the victory. Sethi was defeated 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 line. The clinching point came on court five when Engbroks was beaten 7-5, 6-1 by Galieva.

No. 105 Emma Devine was tied in the second set with Tamuna Kutubidze, 6-3, 5-5, when the match ended. On court four, Brigante was also tied, 7-6, 2-2, when play was suspended.

"Emma Devine was a warrior this weekend. Despite being sick all week, she still found it within herself to give us two great performances," Mullins said.

The Sooners are back in action Friday in Norman to face the Oregon Ducks.
