When the 2017 women's gymnastics season begins in early January, Oklahoma will have its sights set on a third overall and second straight NCAA title. But that quest will not be easy as the defending national champions will challenge themselves with an exciting and difficult slate.
Head women's gymnastics coach K.J. Kindler and Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione revealed the Sooners' full competition schedule Friday morning, which features 11 regular-season events and seven opponents who qualified for the 2016 NCAA Championships, including Alabama, Auburn, California, Georgia, LSU, Nebraska and UCLA.
Inside Lloyd Noble Center, the Sooners will play host to a talented group of competitors, including dual meets with 2016 Super Six qualifiers Alabama in the season-opening meet on Jan. 6, UCLA (Jan. 15) and Georgia for Senior Night (Feb. 24). OU will also hold a quad meet with Big 12 foe Denver, Nebraska and TWU on Feb. 3.
"I anticipate this to be one of the toughest schedules in the country highlighted by star-studded home matchups paired with difficult road challenges."
K.J. Kindler
“This season will be like no other in the history of our program! We have the incredible challenge of competing against three of the 2016 Super Six teams at home in the LNC," Kindler stated. "UCLA, Georgia and Alabama are three of the six programs in the history of women's gymnastics to ever win multiple national championships and all three will provide an intense and entertaining competition for our fans. Denver and Nebraska are two very tough successful programs who are well coached and hungry. The best of the best are coming to Norman and you won't want to miss a single meet!
“I anticipate this to be one of the toughest schedules in the country highlighted by star-studded home matchups paired with difficult road challenges," Kindler continued. "There is strong conference representation with meets against opponents in the Big 12, SEC, Pac-12 and Big Ten.”
Away from Norman, the Sooners will compete in seven regular-season contests, starting with conference road trips to West Virginia (Jan. 21) and Iowa State (Jan. 27). OU is also scheduled for meets at TWU (Feb. 26), Michigan (March 4) and California (March 12).
OU will prep for the NCAA Championships with two neutral site podium meets. On Feb. 10, OU will once again participate in the annual Perfect 10 Challenge inside Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, facing SEC foe Auburn. The next week, OU will take on 2016 NCAA runner-up LSU, Georgia and Missouri in the GYMQuarters Mardi Gras Invitational in St. Charles, Mo., on Feb. 17.
“It is a unique experience to be able to compete on podium in our own backyard at the Cox Center," Kindler said. "The crowds have grown each year and the atmosphere is electric. Auburn is a strong program and the matchup will be the perfect preparation for NCAAs.”
OU's postseason journey will begin at the Big 12 Championship on March 18 in Frisco, Texas, where it will be in pursuit of its sixth straight Big 12 title. NCAA Regional competition is slated for April 1, with Seattle, Wash.; Gainesville, Fla.; Fayetteville, Ark.; Champaign, Ill.; Lincoln, Neb.; and Morgantown, W.Va. serving as host sites.
The 2017 NCAA Championships will be held inside Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Mo., on April 14-15.
“Fans are always hooked after they attend a meet. It is pure excitement from beginning to end. It is a program goal is to shatter the single meet attendance record, the average season attendance and double the number of season ticket holders.”

Currently, 10 of the Sooners' regular season competitions will air live on television or stream online. This includes all four home contests and the Perfect 10 Challenge, which will air through Sooner Sports TV powered by FOX Sports.
From its 2016 national championship squad, OU returns six gymnasts who combined for 12 All-America honors in seniors Chayse Capps, Charity Jones and McKenzie Wofford, juniors Natalie Brown and AJ Jackson and sophomore Nicole Lehrmann. Also returning to the squad following a one-year deferment is 2015 World Championship Gold medalist, Brenna Dowell. As a freshman, Dowell earned two All-America honors at the 2015 NCAA Championships. In addition to the returners, the Sooners also add newcomers Maggie Nichols, Jade Degouveia and Brehanna Showers. Along with Dowell, Nichols helped lead Team USA to a Gold medal at the 2015 World Championships. Degouveia and Showers, both members of the USA Junior Olympic National team, round out the freshman class.
