October 27, 2016 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team hosted its annual preseason scrimmage on Thursday night as seven players finished in double figures during the intrasquad contest.

OU's roster of 15 players alternated between the Crimson and White teams throughout the night. The Sooners played two 10-minute quarters and used two more periods to work on half-court offense.

Gabbi Ortiz led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The junior knocked down three 3-pointers and pulled down six rebounds. Senior guard Gioya Carter also finished with 20 points, shooting 6-of-15 from the field. The Midwest City, Okla., native was 8-of-10 from the free throw line and added in five rebounds and two steals.

Junior center McKenna Treece finished 7-of-12 from the field and posted 17 points along with six boards, while fellow junior Vionise Pierre-Louis added in 16 points, four rebounds and two blocks.

Derica Wyatt was 5-of-12 from the field, including a team-best 5-of-11 from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points. Senior guard Maddie Manning recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior guard T'ona Edwards also finished in double figures with 13 points and a team-high six assists.

The Sooners host Midwestern State (Nov. 2; 7 p.m. CT) and Oklahoma City (Nov. 7; 7 p.m. CT) for exhibition games to begin the season at Lloyd Noble Center. OU opens its regular season on Nov. 13 against Southern Illinois at 12:30 p.m. CT.

QUOTES FROM THE SCRIMMAGE

T'ONA EDWARDS

On how the offense played:
“I think we played well. We're still getting used to our concepts and our new offense but once we get that going I think our offense will have a lot more rhythm.”

On McKenna Treece's performance:
“They continue to battle down low, and McKenna's (Treece) attack mentality has really helped us. (Vionise Pierre-Louis) is always great, so with those two tagging a lot this season we should be great.”

GIOYA CARTER

On the scrimmage:

“It was good for the most part. We're learning a new offense and things like that, but I think with that being said, we did an okay job on offense. At times we kind of got messed up with being in the right spots and things like that, but overall we were pretty good.”

On the offense's ball movement:
“I think our ball movement was great. I know Derica (Wyatt) got a lot of threes off the good ball movement.”

GABBI ORTIZ

On the tempo of the scrimmage:
“It was our first time really getting up and down and playing. We're a little winded at times, and I think we practice a lot better, but it was good to get a feel. I think we had some good ball movement and some good post action. I think we shot the ball pretty well, and we had fun.”

On the team's depth:
“It's nice to have that in pocket. It lets you take a deep breath. We have a lot of offensive weapons, and it's nice to have such a deep bench and to be able to have different threats all over the floor.”

MCKENNA TREECE

On her performance:
“It's pretty cool. It's a good opportunity to get used to the stage and have people watching us again as opposed to practice every day.”

On the offensive flow:
“It's so comforting to see everyone just flow together tonight. A lot of us are upperclassmen now. We've all been together and it just feels like this is going to be a special year.”

On improvement during the scrimmage:
“Tonight was a really good place to start. We've been practicing for a couple of weeks now, and I think we are capable of a whole lot more than we showed tonight, but again, trying to get comfortable in front of all of our fans plays a big factor. Tonight was good, but we have a lot of room to improve.”

NANCY MULKEY

On her first preseason scrimmage as a Sooner:
“It was nerve-wracking, but of course every freshman is going to be nervous. To finally play on the main floor and having to get used to the pace. It's faster and the competition is the same as you now. I had fun.”

On the team's performance
“It went pretty well. We can do better. For the first scrimmage it went pretty well and we look forward to the exhibition game next week.”
