OU and UM football have met just once in the illustrious history of the two programs; a 14-6 Sooner win at the Orange Bowl to cap off a 1975 National Championship. The baseball teams have played 15 times with Oklahoma holding a 12-3 advantage in the series; having last met in 2007.

Pete Hughes, Head Coach

On the strength of the schedule:

“It's my responsibility to put our team in position, scheduling-wise, to play in the national tournament. To do that, you can't go soft non-conference. You have to have some quality opponents in the non-conference and you're going to have to go on the road. You can't just sit home. We're looking to win on the road and build toughness. To go where we want to go, we need to win on the road. I think there's a good balance. It is absolutely challenging.”

On challenging the team in non-conference play:

“We're not going to shy away from scheduling. I think that's the only way we can build our resume and build a really tough, quality team by playing quality opponents. Right out of the gate, we go to Long Beach State, who had a breakthrough year last year and they're really good in their home park. That's going to be a great challenge. Then we come home and play in a tournament, which includes upstart Boston College that had a Cinderella year last year. That stretch in Atlanta is designed for RPI and to get better on the road before we head into conference play. That will be a pivotal week for us.”

On the Michigan series:

“Another interesting series is Michigan. There is going to be a lot of challenges with that one. I think our kids are tough enough to handle the challenges that this schedule represents. To play them on the second week of April in Ann Arbor is going to be uncomfortable. Our guys have to embrace that. I'm looking forward to seeing how this group responds. I believe in the guys in our clubhouse to take on a schedule of this magnitude.”

On opening on the road:

“I kind of like opening on the road. I think the weather is going to be more consistent in southern California. It's pivotal to play those games without the threat of bad weather. That's what drove that decision as well as playing a quality opponent on the road.”

On preparing for the Big 12 schedule:

“Hopefully the schedule will prepare us by building a strong enough foundation to head down the home stretch. That's a pretty tough way to end the season in conference; with TCU and Oklahoma State. Fortunately for us, we get to take the field as the home team in each of those series. To host TCU and then end the regular season with Bedlam is a pretty fun way to lead into the Big 12 Tournament.”
