Sooners Look To Rebound at TCU Wednesday

WEDNESDAY'S GAME BASICS

Oklahoma (10-3, 1-1 Big 12) finishes its first two-game roadstand of Big 12 play when it takes on TCU (10-3, 2-0 Big 12) Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The Sooners, who are coming off a 78-68 loss at No. 4/4 Baylor on Sunday, are 3-1 in true road games this season. TCU, which is 8-1 at home this year (only loss was to No. 3 Notre Dame, 88-72), enters Wednesday's game after a 87-73 victory over Kansas State last Saturday.

Wednesday's game will air on Fox Sports Southwest + with Chuck LaMendola and Janice Dziuk announcing. The contest will also air on the Sooner Radio Network with Brian Brinkley calling the action.


FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

• Oklahoma owns a 17-4 advantage against TCU and has won eight out of the last 10 meetings. The Sooners are 6-4 all-time in Fort Worth, and posted a 97-81 victory last year against the Horned Frogs on the road. OU's 97 points tied a program record for most points scored in a road Big 12 game. The Sooners swept the season series a year ago with a 77-54 win at Lloyd Noble Center (box scores and cumulative stats from last year's two meetings are on page 7 of these notes).

• Wednesday's matchup features two of the Big 12's top 3-point shooting teams. TCU leads the conference with a .416 3-point shooting percentage, while the Sooners are fourth in the league with a .345 mark. The Horned Frogs also average 7.8 3-pointers per game (second in the Big 12). Oklahoma is third in the conference with 7.7 treys per contest this season.

• OU's Gabbi Ortiz and Derica Wyatt rank eighth in the league with 2.0 3-pointers made per game, while Peyton Little is 10th in the Big 12 averaging 1.9 triples per contest. TCU's Zahna Medley is first in the conference with 3.0 3-pointers per game, while Toree Thompson averages 2.3 makes per game from behind the arc (second in the Big 12) this season.

Peyton Little

Redshirt junior guard Peyton Little led the Sooners with 19 points and hit four 3-pointers Sunday at Baylor.

Kaylon Williams has scored in double figures in all 13 games, a streak that ranks 11th in school history to begin a season. The redshirt senior forward has led the Sooners in scoring five times this season and leads the team with five double-doubles. She is one of just three players in the Big 12 to rank in the top-11 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage.

• Eight OU players are averaging double-figure minutes for the Sooners through 13 games. Gabbi Ortiz (27.7), Maddie Manning (28.3) and Peyton Little (31.7) are averaging 25-plus minutes per contest. Little's 31.7 minutes per game is the eighth-best average in the conference heading into Wednesday's game.


GAME 13 RECAP: BAYLOR

• No. 18/19 Oklahoma dropped its first Big 12 contest of the season, falling to No. 4/4 Baylor, 78-68, on Sunday at Ferrell Center.

• Four Sooners scored in double figures led by Peyton Little's 19 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the field. The redshirt junior, who scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half, tied a season-high with four 3-pointers in 37 minutes. Little also tied a season-high with six assists and finished the night 4 of 9 from behind the arc.

Gabbi Ortiz added 11 points for the Sooners in the second half to finish with 14 on 4 of 11 shooting. T'ona Edwards provided a spark for OU off the bench with 11 points in 19 minutes of action. Kaylon Williams finished in doubles figures for the 13th time this season, recording 11 points and adding in nine rebounds. Williams also picked up two blocks, passing Leah Rush for 10th-place in the OU record books with 62 career blocks.

• Oklahoma jumped out to an early 11-6 advantage with 5:41 left in the first quarter behind five points from Little, but the Lady Bears closed the opening stanza with an 11-4 run over the final 4:50 to grab the lead for good. The Sooners committed 15 of their 18 turnovers in the first half, allowing Baylor to capitalize with 15 points off turnovers.


PREVIEWING TCU

• Picked by the Big 12 coaches to finish fifth in the league, TCU is 10-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Horned Frogs posted an 87-73 win over Kansas State last Saturday after winning its league opener on the road at Texas Tech, 78-69. TCU is 8-1 at home this season. The Horned Frogs average 77.8 points per game (ranks second in the Big 12) on a .449 field goal percentage (third), .416 3-point shooting (first) and .738 free throw shooting (second). It ranks ninth in the conference in field goal percentage defense (.389) and rebounding margin (+1.7).

• Senior guard Zahna Medley leads four Horned Frogs who average double figures in scoring. Medley is sixth in the Big 12 with her 16.3 points per game, third with 3.9 assists per game and fourth with a .443 3-point mark. She scored 27 points on 7 of 11 shooting with five 3-pointers in TCU's win over Kansas State. Senior guard Veja Hamilton averages 11.4 points per game and grabs 4.5 rebounds per contest. She tied a career-high with 18 points in TCU's last contest against Kansas State. Sophomore guard Toree Thompson leads the Big 12 in 3-point shooting percentage with a .508 mark and averages 10.5 points per contest. Sophomore guard AJ Alix is second in the league shooting .457 from behind the arc and is fourth on the squad with 10.3 points per game.

The Sooners are 5-1 against TCU since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12 prior to the 2012-13 season. OU has won eight out of the last 10 meetings between the two programs.

• TCU is under the direction of head coach Raegan Pebley, who is in her second season with the Horned Frogs (28-17 record). Pebley is 184-192 overall in her 13 seasons as a head coach.

• Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 17-4, against TCU with the Sooners winning five out of six meetings since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12 prior to the 2012-13 season. The Sooners are 6-4 all-time in Fort Worth.

• The Sooners swept both meetings between the two teams last season. OU won 97-81 in Fort Worth, tying a school record for most points scored in a regular season Big 12 game in school history. The Sooners wrapped up the sweep with a 77-54 victory in Norman.

• OU head coach Sherri Coale is 13-3 against the Horned Frogs during her tenure with the Sooners. Coale is 2-0 against TCU head coach Raegan Pebley.


AMONG THE ELITE

Kaylon Williams is one of just three players in the Big 12 to rank in the top 11 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage this season. Only Kansas State's Breanna Lewis and Oklahoma State's Kaylee Jensen have accomplished that feat.

• The redshirt senior is third in the league in rebounding (9.2 rpg), 10th in scoring (14.4) and 11th in field goal percentage (.565).

• Williams is looking to etch her name in the OU record books. She already ranks seventh in school history with 285 offensive rebounds, just 23 shy of passing Caton Hill for sixth place. Williams needs just 50 points to become the 21st 1,000-point scorer in program history.

• Last season, Williams ranked fourth in the nation with a .596 field goal percentage.


MAP FROM DOWNTOWN

• The Sooners have had no problem finding the bottom of the net from 3-point range to start their Big 12 slate. OU is 16 of 44 (.364) from behind the arc in its first two Big 12 contests, finishing with 10 treys at Baylor on Sunday. Three players have hit four 3-pointers in a single game against conference foes so far: Derica Wyatt (4 of 7, vs. Kansas), Peyton Little (4 of 9, at Baylor) and Gabbi Ortiz (4 of 10, at Baylor).

• OU is tied for third along with TCU with 8.0 3-pointers per game in Big 12 competition. This season, The Sooners are third in the conference with 7.7 triples per contests. OU has made 10 or more 3-pointers five times in 13 games this season. It took the Sooners 26 games to accomplish that feat a year ago.

• Through its first two Big 12 games, OU boasts .364 3-point field goal shooting percentage (ranks third in the Big 12) and is fourth in the league with a .413 shooting percentage.

• Wyatt is tied for third among players in the conference with a .600 3-point shooting percentage (6 of 10), while Little ranks 15th at .364 (4 of 11).


COUNTING DIMES

• Since the start of Big 12 play, Oklahoma has registered 16.5 assists per game (ranks second in the league). T'ona Edwards and Maddie Manning lead the team with 3.5 assists per game through OU's first two conference games.

• The Sooners are 34th in the nation in assists per game, averaging 16.5 per contest. OU has recorded 15 or more assists in eight of its 13 games this year.


QUICK HITTERS

Derica Wyatt's four 3-pointers against Kansas are tied for the most by any player in the Big 12 during conference play. Wyatt is shooting .366 (26 of 71) from 3-point range this season, scoring in doubles figures three times in the last five games. The junior is tied for the lead with 3.0 3-pointers per game since league play began.

Gioya Carter made her first appearance of the 2015-16 season last Wednesday vs. Kansas and scored on her first shot attempt of the year. The junior finished with two points, two rebounds and one assist in 15 minutes of action. Carter averaged 9.9 points per game last year for the Sooners along with averaging 12.0 points per game against Big 12 foes.

Gabbi Ortiz's six 3-pointers in OU's win over UTSA on Dec. 13 were just one shy of tying the Lloyd Noble Center record. Margaret McKeon and Morgan Hook hold the record with seven triples in a single game. The six triples by Ortiz also are tied for the most by a Big 12 player in a single game this year.

• Oklahoma is 34th in the nation (tied for fourth in the Big 12) with 16.5 assists per game this season. The Sooners have recorded 216 assists as a team led by T'ona Edwards 3.4 assists per game.

• The Sooners average 31.6 points per game in the paint. This season 406 of 927 total points (43.8 percent) have come through the paint, while holding foes to 23.8 points per game in the post. OU also has outscored its opponents by 6.1 points per game off turnovers on the year (18.6-12.5).

• OU is 9-0 this season when outrebounding its opponent. The Sooners have dominated the boards over the last five games with a +7.8 margin on the glass. OU has also held 11 of their 13 opponents to sub-45 percent field goal shooting (eight times in the last 10 games). No opponent has shot 50 percent of better this season. The Sooners have also limited 10 of its 13 foes to sub 33-percent 3-point shooting.

• The Sooners are 295-213 (.581) all-time against Big 12 competition and 202-112 (.645) under Sherri Coale.

• Coale will be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on June 30, 2016, in Knoxville, Tenn. Coale is OU's all-time leader in wins (430) and has led the Sooners to three Final Fours and 16 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

• The Sooners return the majority of their production in every statistical category for 2015-16. That includes 81 percent of the team's points and rebounds, along with 85 percent of its assists, 81 percent of its blocks and 78 percent of its steals. OU also brings back 80 percent of its made 3-point field goals and its free throw production. 11 letterwinners return from last season's squad that combined to play 5,377 minutes a year ago.
