NORMAN – The No. 35 Oklahoma women's tennis team dropped its season opener 5-2 to No. 39 Wichita State at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion Sunday.

The Sooners (0-1) lost the doubles point to begin the match.

"Doubles was a struggle today. I thought we had a great week of doubles practice," OU head coach David Mullins said. "The doubts and weaknesses we have in doubles were really exploited. We didn't trust ourselves or believe in ourselves."

At No. 2, the first singles match to finish, junior Mimi Fotopoulos fell 6-0, 6-1 to Wichita State's Rebecca Pedrazzi, giving WSU a 2-0 advantage.

The Sooners battled back, claiming the No. 1 singles match as sophomore Lily Miyazaki swept the Shockers' No. 71 Gabriela Porubin 6-2, 6-3 to earn OU's lone singles victory of the match.

"Lily was awesome. That's what we expect from her," Mullins said. "She looked very much in control and picked up from where she left off in November. It was good to see her get off the court quickly against a highly ranked player. That's the level we know she can play at."

At No. 5, sophomore Christie Brigante fell 6-4, 6-4 to WSU's Aleks Trifunovic. On court two, fellow OU sophomore Simran Sethi battled for nearly two hours, but eventually lost 7-6, 7-5 to Julia Schiller.

The Sooners had managed to force a third set at the No. 4 line. Senior Emma Devine took the opening stanza, 6-4, but dropped the second, 7-6, in a tiebreaker. Devine exchanged games with the Shockers' Abby Stevens before pulling away to win the third set, 6-4, and the match.

"Emma Devine played some of the best tennis I've seen her play in her four years here," Mullins said. "Abby Stevens (of Wichita State) rarely loses, so to see her go up against one of Wichita State's more consistent points and pull out a win is fantastic."

Sophomore Malene Stripp was tied 1-1 with Wichita State's Tanaporn Thongsing when she retired at the end of the second set due to injury. Thongsing was given the win.

Oklahoma goes on its first road trip of the season next weekend, beginning with a match against Utah in Santa Barbara, Calif., next Saturday. The Sooners wrap up the road swing against UC-Santa Barbara next Sunday.
