Meirow Comes in Fourth in XC Season Opener

NORMAN - After redshirting during the 2014 season, University of Oklahoma freshman Liam Meirow was ready to hit the course.
Meirow opened his cross country career with the Sooners Tuesday, taking fourth in the 5,000-meter race at the Cowboy Preview meet hosted by Oklahoma State.
"For Liam's first collegiate race and first time he lined up, I think he put himself in a good position," said Jason Dunn, associate head cross country coach. "He battled with some pretty established guys from OSU and I was pleased with his spot. He had a solid day."
Meirow finished behind three OSU runners with a time of 15:37.6, just missing a top-three finish by .6 of a second. He battled for second throughout the race, but fell behind close to the finish line.
The Dillon, Colo., native, was the top finisher of the day for both the Sooner men and women's teams. Meirow's top-four finish against a competitive field did not go unnoticed. Participating teams included USTFCCCA's preseason national No. 4 OSU and No. 17 Arkansas. Tulsa ranks fourth in the USTFCCCA Preseason Midwest Region Poll.
"It's good experience for him and the team to be exposed to collegiate cross country and to find out what it's all about," Dunn said. "Liam got a good sense of what it's all about. It was good for him to have some success and we look forward to him having even more success."
Senior Allen Eke and redshirt freshman Brendan Taylor also had top-10 finishes for the Sooners. Eke placed seventh with a time of 16:00.5 and Taylor was eighth with a 16:09.9, respectively. Matt Braffford finished 15th (16:32.7), Hunter Heaton 16th (16:37.3), and Jacob Goldberg came in 23rd with a time of 17:31.8 to close the day for the men.
In the dual meet format Oklahoma men finished 2-1, coming ahead of Tulsa and Arkansas and falling to OSU.
The women's team faced a competitive field as well going up against nationally No. 9 Arkansas and No. 30 OSU. The women finished with 1-2, outpacing Tulsa, but falling behind OSU and Arkansas.
Sooner freshman Alexandria Arndorfer was the lone Sooner to finish in the top 10. She tacked a 10:50.4 in the women's 3,000-meter trek to finish 10th overall.
"I'm definitely pleased with Alex," Dunn said. "She's off to a really good start. She's done well in practice.
"It's really good to see a true freshman place in 10th in her first collegiate race," Dunn added. "She's done really well and we will continue to build upon that."
Freshman Isabella Rose followed with a 12th-place finish with a time of 11:03.6. Marissa Codispodi and Grace Barber also placed in the top 20 at the meet with Codispodi finishing 15th (11:07.0) and Barber 16th (11:08.9).
"It was a mixed bag," Dunn said. "But this is part of what competing early on is about. It's an opportunity to learn and hopefully we'll be more prepared as the season progresses."
